Mount Sinabung is located in the Karo
highlands, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Mount
Sinabung is also a volcano along with Mount
Sibayak that is located near this mountain.
Before the recent eruption, his mountain has
never been recorded since the 1600 eruption.
Mount Sinabung is located on Sunda Arc, a
volcanic arc that has produced the islands of
Sumatra, Java, the Sunda Strait (Selat Sunda)
and the Lesser Sunda Islands (Kepulauan Nusa
Tenggara)
2010 Eruption
On 27 August 2010, the activity of this
mountain increased and produced smoke and
volcanic ash. On August 29, 2010 at around
0:15 pm, Sinabung erupted after there was no
activity for 400 years. Ash spewed into the
atmosphere up to 1.5 kilometres and lava was
seen overflowing the crater.
On Friday 3 September, there were two more
eruptions whose ash spewed up into the
atmosphere about 3.0 kilometres high. On
Tuesday 7 September, Mount Sinabung
erupted again, it is the biggest eruption since it
became active on August 29, 2010. The smoke
was spewed up into the atmosphere about 5.0
kilometres high.
The Indonesian government was reported to
have evacuated around 18,000 people from
the region on and around the volcano. They
also set up kitchens for refugees and handed
out 7,000 masks. There were no disruptions
reported to air services at the regional airport,
Polonia International Airport that is located on
Medan, the capital city of North Sumatera.
