Parsing

This is a comprehensive list. Those who are in beginning levels of Latin may not recognize some
of the terms and forms on this list.

Parsing is the explanation of the form and the syntax (grammatical explanation) of words. It
consists of two parts, (1) exact identification of the form of the word and (2) an explanation of its
use in the sentence.

I. Identification

If the word is a: then you should give:

Noun Case, Number, and Gender


Adjective Case, Number, and Gender
Pronoun Case, Number, and Gender
Relative Pronoun Case, Number, and Gender
Verb Person, Number, Tense, Voice, and Mood
Participle Tense, Voice, Case, Number, and Gender
Infinitive Tense and Voice

II. Syntax (grammatical explanation)

If the word is a: then you should give:

Noun why it is in the case it is


Adjective the word it modifies; if it is use substantivally, indicate this
Pronoun why it is in the case it is; what noun it is standing for
Relative Pronoun why it is in the case it is; its antecedent
Verb why it is in the mood it is
Participle what it modifies; why it is in the case it is
Infinitive why is it in the infinitive form
