ARREST MADE IN SAN MARCOS ASSAULT

On August 10, 2008 at approximately 9:00 pm, deputies from the Sheriff’s San Marcos
Patrol Station responded to 1870 Shadetree Drive in San Marcos on the report of a
stabbing. Neighbors heard a female screaming for help and glass breaking. When
deputies arrived, they found the victim (name being withheld) with multiple stab wounds
and severe lacerations to her face. The suspect in this assault fled the scene prior to
deputies arriving. The Sheriff’s Domestic Violence Unit responded and began the
investigation.

The San Diego Regional Fugitive Task Force administered by the U.S. Marshal’s, were
called to assist with the identification and apprehension of the suspect. An arrest
warrant was issued and the suspect has been identified as:

Shelley Malil
(Eastern Indian Male Adult)
5’-10”, 160 LBS, Black/Brown
DOB 12-23-1964
15222 Magnolia #109, Sherman Oaks, CA

Malil and the victim had apparently been in a dating relationship which recently ended. It
is unclear at this time exactly why Malil was at the victim’s home or a motive for the
attack. The victim sustained over 20 stab wounds and was transported to a local
hospital. (The victim survived the attack and her exact condition has not been released).
Investigators from the Sheriff’s Crime Lab responded and are processing the scene for
evidence.

The Task Force, in conjunction with friends, family and the suspect’s attorney were able
to contact Malil and persuade him to turn himself in to authorities. At approximately 6:15
p.m. on Monday August 11, 2008, Malil was taken into custody without incident by
agents of the San Diego Regional Fugitive Task Force. Malil was on an Amtrak train
from Los Angeles to Oceanside, CA. to meet with his attorney.

Malil was transported to the Sheriff’s San Marcos Patrol Station to be interviewed and
ultimately booked into the Vista Detention Facility. Malil is facing charges of Attempted
Murder, Residential Burglary, and Mayhem.
