INTRODUCTION

The FAO defines forest and woodland

as land under natural or planted
stands of trees, whether productive or
not, including landform which forests
have been cleared but will be
restored in near future.
Forest contain about 90% of biomass and
cover only one third of the land area of earth.

FAO estimates about 29% of surface of the

globe ,forest land accounts for 30%
 Closed forest :those in which tree crowns
spread over 20% or more of the ground and
have a potential for commercial timber
harvesting
 Open forest: those where tree crown covers
less than 20% of the ground.

DISTRIBUTION OF FORESTS IN INDIA
 India had abundant forest in ancient periods
 At the beginning of 20th century about 30% of
India was occupied by forest
 At the end of 20th century it declines to 19.4%
 Dense forest cover, with tree canopy covering
40% or more declined tremendously
 By1997 it accounted for only11.5%
 Presently per capita forest available is 0.06%
hectares, which is much below of world’s average
of 0.64% hectares per person
