TEMS POCKET 9.0 OVERVIEW

TEMS Pocket 9.0 – Measurement Possibilities

TEMS Pocket is a PC-independent measurement system running on
Nokia Symbian phones.
TEMS Pocket provides a variety of tests (see below) which can be
mixed together into a measurement configuration. A measurement
configuration runs a defined number of times, for a certain duration
or until the user stops it.

Speech tests / Mobile–Mobile Speech tests

(Option) Speech quality is measured between two TEMS Pocket or a
TEMS Pocket and an answer station playing speech samples. The
evaluation is done by using the PESQ algorithm according to ITU-T
Rec. P.862. The speech samples are provided in English, French and
German.
Speech samples for answer station: Memory Card (E:)\TEMS_Pocket_9

Video Telephony tests

Video telephony tests are done by calling a VT capable answer
station. The same KPIs as for speech tests are evaluated except
Speech MOS.

HTTP tests
HTTP tests are done by downloading any public Web page.
Application throughput as well as IP throughput can be measured.
If necessary, it is possible to configure an HTTP proxy server.

60315165-TPUM 1.0 en / released © Ascom Network Testing Ltd, 6.5.10 9

TEMS POCKET 9.0 OVERVIEW

Ping tests
A burst of ICMP Ping messages can be sent to any computer that
supports Ping by either giving its IP address or its DNS name.

FTP tests
FTP tests either download an existing file from a public FTP server
or upload a file of a given size and type to a public FTP server.
Supported file types for upload: Random binary data, random text,
JPEG image, compressed zip file.

Example of an FTP test with HSPA

WAP tests
The WAP test downloads WML pages and their content from any
public page using the WAP 2.0 protocol.

SMS tests
SMS tests are carried out by sending SMS messages to its own. The
message size can be configured.

MMS tests
MMS tests are carried out by sending MMS messages to its own. A
list of predefined contents consisting of a mixture of text, pictures,
sound and video is provided for selection.

Additional Options

PESQ
Real evaluation of This option enables the speech quality evaluation according to
speech quality ITU-P.862. The speech quality of a connection is evaluated in the
same way as it is experienced by the subscriber. As a result TEMS
Pocket is capable of evaluating the speech quality objectively and
with reproducible results.
The spoken text has been very carefully chosen for each language
so that it is phonetically balanced, i.e. it contains the mostly used
phonemes and diphones of the language.
MOS scores are calculated directly on the mobile phone during the
speech call:

1 bad
2 poor
3 fair
4 good
51) excellent
1) A 5.0 rating cannot be achieved in telecommunications as coding already
results in a certain reduction in quality. The maximum rating achievable with
P.862.1 is 4.5

P.862 (also referred to as «Raw PESQ»)

The PESQ algorithm determines speech quality on a separate scale
(see ITU-T Rec. P.862).
Not
comparable
Due to differing scale ranges numerical values are not directly
comparable with the MOS scale.

Indoor Map
This feature enables loading of prepared «Indoor Locations» into
TEMS Pocket, so you can enter the measurement positions on the
Measurement Screen during indoor measurements.

RF Scan Mode
This option turns your TEMS Pocket into a handheld scanner for
GSM and WCDMA.

TEMS POCKET 9.0 OVERVIEW

Measurement procedure and analysis with

TEMS Pocket

n Creating measurement configurations

This is normally done on a PC using the «TEMS Pocket Tools»
delivered with your TEMS Pocket, and the measurement configu-
ration files are afterwards transferred to the mobile phone.
It is also possible to create or edit measurement configurations on
the mobile phone itself using the «TEMS Pocket» application.

o Measurement
The mobile phone can be used independent from a PC. You can
select a measurement configuration, carry out measurements
(recording the data) and display live results. Measurements are
controlled by the «TEMS Pocket» application on the mobile phone.

p Analysing result files

TEMS Pocket creates «.QMZ» result files.
The files can be…
• replayed directly on the phone
• imported into the very powerful presentation and analysis tools
TEMS Discovery or QVoice Presentation (part of the TEMS
Symphony Suite, based on an SQL database)
Before displaying with QVoice Field Analyser, the files must be
converted into QMD format on a PC using the QMZ Decoder.

TEMS Discovery and QVoice Presentation (part of the TEMS
Symphony Suite) support the import of QMZ files. During import
the files are converted to QMD files which can take a considerable
amount of time.

Converting QMZ files into QMD files

The generated QMD files have the same names as the original QMZ
files except for the extension.

Converting a single file

Double-click the file.

Converting multiple files

Start the «QMZ Decoder» from the Windows Start menu:
Start – Programs – Ascom – TEMS Products – QMZ Decoder

Converting a whole directory with many files

TEMS POCKET 9.0 SPECIAL OPERATIONS

Adjust the Phone Clock

Adjust it by
TEMS Pocket
If the phone clock displays a wrong time, you must adjust it
following this instructions.
Changing the clock by hand may cause license consistency problems.
In certain cases the phone clock is reset, e.g. after a full reset. Since
the «TEMS Pocket» application supervises the phone clock, it will
reset the time to the last time, the mobile phone has been turned
off.
If you ever need to adjust, you need to do this using the «TEMS
Pocket» application: Open the application and select the appro-
priate command:

a) Options – Update phone time with GPS

If you are near a window or outside, the built-in GPS receiver knows
not only the valid position but also the exact world time; so we
suggest using this method to update the clock.

b) Options – Update phone time with NTP (PS)

This will connect the mobile phone to a public time server using a
packet switched connection and update the clock from this time.
NTP time update might not be possible in certain networks.
Only the clock’s universal time is checked and updated. If you travel
from one time zone to another, you have to adjust the current time
zone and daylight saving:

Changing current time zone

Press and open «Settings – Clock».
Choose «Options – Settings» and adjust your Time zone.
