1 Overview
Target Audience
This Manual is aimed at «TEMS Pocket 9.0» users who configures
measurements and carries them out.
Text Conventions
The following text conventions and symbols will help you to find
your way around quickly and keep an overview at all times:
Notation Meaning
Normal text
Italics To highlight, to emphasise
Margin text Key word for better orientation
«OK», «Guard Time», Button, text in a dialog box,
«TEMS Pocket Tools» window title, term
Symbols
Margin text with
Take Note
symbol
The Take Note symbol indicates important explanations and tips.
Caution
The Caution symbol points to important or critical operations and
helps you to avoid errors in the first place and to prevent any
damage or injury to users and/or the system.
Safety instructions
Vehicle-based Operation
• The driver must not under any circumstances be distracted by
the display of TEMS Pocket when carrying out vehicle-based
measurements.
• TEMS Pocket is only to be operated when the vehicle is at a
standstill.
Protect
operators
Safeguard against accidents – Do not distract the driver
TEMS Pocket is to be positioned in such a way that the driver is
not distracted while driving: The measurement display must not
be visible to the driver.
Exclusion of liability
Ascom Network Testing Ltd shall not assume any liability if the
requirements for the positioning or the operation of TEMS Pocket
are not met.
Available tests
• Speech, Mobile–Mobile Speech, Video Telephony
• SMS, MMS
• IP Data: Ping, HTTP, FTP, WAP
From the built-in GPS receiver, positional data can also be included
in the measurement.
Data acquisition
The measurement data is stored as raw data on the phone’s
memory card and can be downloaded to a PC via wireless transfer
or USB.
HTTP tests
HTTP tests are done by downloading any public Web page.
Application throughput as well as IP throughput can be measured.
If necessary, it is possible to configure an HTTP proxy server.
Ping tests
A burst of ICMP Ping messages can be sent to any computer that
supports Ping by either giving its IP address or its DNS name.
FTP tests
FTP tests either download an existing file from a public FTP server
or upload a file of a given size and type to a public FTP server.
Supported file types for upload: Random binary data, random text,
JPEG image, compressed zip file.
WAP tests
The WAP test downloads WML pages and their content from any
public page using the WAP 2.0 protocol.
SMS tests
SMS tests are carried out by sending SMS messages to its own. The
message size can be configured.
MMS tests
MMS tests are carried out by sending MMS messages to its own. A
list of predefined contents consisting of a mixture of text, pictures,
sound and video is provided for selection.
Additional Options
PESQ
Real evaluation of This option enables the speech quality evaluation according to
speech quality ITU-P.862. The speech quality of a connection is evaluated in the
same way as it is experienced by the subscriber. As a result TEMS
Pocket is capable of evaluating the speech quality objectively and
with reproducible results.
The spoken text has been very carefully chosen for each language
so that it is phonetically balanced, i.e. it contains the mostly used
phonemes and diphones of the language.
MOS scores are calculated directly on the mobile phone during the
speech call:

Indoor Map
This feature enables loading of prepared «Indoor Locations» into
TEMS Pocket, so you can enter the measurement positions on the
Measurement Screen during indoor measurements.
RF Scan Mode
This option turns your TEMS Pocket into a handheld scanner for
GSM and WCDMA.
o Measurement
The mobile phone can be used independent from a PC. You can
select a measurement configuration, carry out measurements
(recording the data) and display live results. Measurements are
controlled by the «TEMS Pocket» application on the mobile phone.
2 Installation
This chapter explains the installation of the «TEMS Pocket Tools»
on a PC and the installation of «TEMS Pocket» application on a
mobile phone.
Procedure
Procedure
If the mobile phone has been reset, copy the TEMS Pocket license
file (*.qsl) delivered by Ascom into the
phone’s C:\Data directory. Then go to step r.
Measurement configurations
A measurement configuration is composed of one or more tasks in
a defined order.
The whole configuration can be run a defined number of times, for
a certain duration or until the user stops the measurement.

GPS receiver.
No GPS data will be recorded.
Tests in No Net
A measurement is carried out independent of network availability
(activated per default).
APN
Access Point Name: Name of the network provider’s gateway to
other packet data networks such as the Internet. With IP data tasks
you have the possibility to define individual APNs or to use the
global APN. Here you define the global APN that will be used if no
per-task APN is defined.

Inputs as indicated by the network provider.
a) Using «TEMS Pocket Tools» (PC)
An Access Point Editor is provided where you can add and
remove access points. Predefined access points can then be
selected from the combo-box.
b) Using the «TEMS Pocket» application (Mobile phone)
You must enter manually the Access Point Name and if needed
user name and password.

Measurement
Test Location
~ Ask before measurement
At each start of a measurement, an input box appears asking for
the test location name.
The location name is inserted into the measurement file and is used to group the
measurement files according to specific criteria, e.g. geographically or according to
mobile networks. The grouping itself is useful in Replay and post-processing.
~ Select from list
At each start of a measurement, the predefined test location
names appear and you can select the applicable one.
First you must create a file «TestLocations.txt» containing the test location names
and copy it to phone memory C:\Data\Pocket
~ Always use default
The text you enter here will be used as default test location
name.

Procedure
Ascom Network Testing Ltd does not take responsibility for any
data lost due to a mobile phone reset.
Recommen-
dation Î For security reasons, remove the memory card before re-
setting the mobile phone.
Î We recommend connecting the mobile phone to the power
supply before resetting.
A power loss due to an empty battery during resetting may definitively corrupt the
mobile phone.
To reset, go to the Configuration Selection Screen and dial
*#7370#
You will be asked whether you want to restore all phone settings.
Press «Yes». The lock code is «12345». Press OK and the mobile
phone will restart.
After a reset you have to reinstall TEMS Pocket on the mobile
phone, see «TEMS Pocket» on the Mobile Phone on page 17.
Backup

activated Settings
The TEMS Pocket configuration data is also saved and can be
restored including the license file.
Date and time will be checked when restoring the TEMS Pocket
software.
Example:
After a reset of the mobile phone, the phone will reboot and you will be asked to
enter date and time. Enter the correct date and time!
