 What is a periscope?

 A periscope is a device used to see

objects which are not in the direct line of
sight.
 It is also used to see objects from a
concealed position.
 Structure of the periscope.
 Periscope contains
two openings, the top
one to see the objects
and the lower one for
positioning our face.
 It has two corners
where the mirrors are
positioned.
 Inventors of the periscope
 Johann Gutenberg marketed a kind of
periscope in the 1430s. 
 Johannes Hevelius described an early
periscope with lenses in 1647 in his
work.
  Simon Lake used periscopes in his
submarines in 1902. 
 Sir Howard Grubb perfected the device
in World War I.
 Morgan Robertson (1861–1915)
claimed to have tried to patent the
periscope.
 HOW DOES A
PERISCOPE WORK?
The light from the object comes to
the mirror which is in a slanting
position and turns a right angle and
goes on to the second mirror which is
also slanting and again turns a right
angle and comes to our eye. In this
way we can see the object.
 Some places where periscopes are
used
 During World War I, the
periscope was widely used by
soldiers hiding in trenches to
keep an eye on the enemy.

 Military personnel also use

periscopes in some gun
turrets and in armored vehicles.

 Periscopes allow a submarine,

when submerged at a shallow
depth, to search visually for
nearby targets and threats on
the surface of the water and in
the air.
 CONCLUSION

We hope from this presentation we have been

able to increase our knowledge on periscopes.
Thus, we can observe that despite being a
simple device using only the principle of
reflection of light, the periscope has proved to
be useful for humans throughout the years.
