Kothagudem – Part III

In my previous two posts on “The Singareni Collieries Company Limited &
Kothagudem” I wrote about the Collieries, my connection with it and posted old and new
photographs of the mines, workshops, offices and other important locations in the town.
In this; the third article on Singareni I am posting 100 old photographs containing the
pictures of a number of people who were associated with Kothagudem and Singareni
Collieries. Most of the pictures depict my parents along with many other persons at
various events at Kothagudem.
My father, Sri. N. Bhaskarachary was the Chief Personnel Officer of the Singareni
Collieries for 24 years. The picture at the top of this article shows him at his office. He
was associated with a number of activities and organizations during his stay at
Kothagudem. When the 18 month long ‘Emergency’ was declared in June 1975, top
officers of the Collieries were asked to submit their affiliations and association with
Colliery related and other organizations. His list ran very long. He was associated as
Member, President or as Chairman with over 40 Professional, Cultural, Religious,
Recreational and other Service organizations. I am listing a few of them so one can
understand him and the role he played in the Collieries and at Kothagudem. He was the
President of the A.P. State Branch of the Indian Institute of Personnel Management for
eight years. He was a member of the State Advisory Committee for Miners Welfare and
of the District Employment Advisory Committee. As President of the Education Society
he was helpful in the spread of educational institutions in the Collieries and was an active
member of the Governing Council of the local Arts and Science College. He was the
Charter Secretary of the Lions Club of Kothagudem and has been its 1st Vice President
for years. As an active member of Lions Club he helped in organizing major Eye-camps,
construction of Primary Schools and Bus Shelters. As President of Lalitha Kalaniketan
for years, he was organizing periodically programs of renowned artistes in music and
dance and conducting Thyagaraja Utsavalu every year at Kothagudem. He was the
Chairman of the District Association of Bharat Scouts and Guides and also Chairman of
the Singareni Work peoples Sports and Games Association. He was the President of
several Temple committees and took interest in religious activities. As President of the
Town Committee of Vishwa Hindu Parishad he was responsible for arranging the re-
conversion of over 800 persons to Hinduism from other religions. He was also the
District President of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad of Khammam District. He also
encouraged and conducted several Sports and Games meets at Kothagudem and other
Singareni Townships like the All India Coalfield Tournaments, Netaji Subhas Chandra
Bose Foot Ball tournaments, Annual Colliery Sports and Games meets and also Ranji
Trophy Cricket Matches at Kothagudem.
Some of the above photographs are over 40 years old. During all these years many
photographs of my father are lost or misplaced. Whatever few I could get hold of easily I
have posted along with this article. I hope some followers of my blog and acquaintances
at Kothagudem would be happy to see these old photographs.
