• Legacy has awarded $32,999,720.00 in grants to projects in New Jersey.

Tobacco Usage

• In FY2010 New Jersey spent $8.9 million on tobacco prevention, which is 7.4% of the CDC
Annual Spending Target.1

• The CDC estimates that 54.8% of adult smokers in New Jersey tried to quit smoking in
2008.2

• New Jersey received $968 million in tobacco settlement revenue in FY2010.3

• New Jersey has securitized all or parts of its Master Settlement Agreement (MSA)
dollars.4

State Tobacco Laws9

Excise Tax: There is a tax of $2.70 per pack on cigarettes, as of July 1, 2009.

Clean Indoor Air Ordinances


• Smoking is prohibited in all child care centers, government buildings, health facilities,
restaurants, bars, schools and private workplaces.

Youth Access Laws


• The minimum age requirement for the purchase of tobacco products is 19, and penalties
exist for merchants who violate this law.

• Establishments are required to post signs stating that sales to minors are prohibited.

• The sale of bidis to minors is prohibited.
