Procedure for live works to be conducted on MCC starters

Objective

To verify line and control voltages for various live 480VAC MCC starters as well as
perform instantaneous trip tests on the breakers of these starters.

Justification
These checks are necessary to close off all outstanding loop checking and motor running
works and documentation on the various MCC starters.

Procedure
1. Open the desired MCC starter compartment panel cover in order to gain access to
motor control circuit.
2. Using the appropriate PPE energize the appropriate breaker to allow power to the
desired 480V MCC starter.
3. Using a Fluke multimeter, perform the required checks for 480VAC line voltage
and 120VAC control voltage across the primary and secondary sides respectively
of the MCC starter control transformer.
4. Using an insulated tool, simulate an instantaneous trip on the breaker for the
desired MCC starter
5. After checks and tests are completed, de-energize the breaker close the respective
MCC compartment panel cover, and execute all necessary lock and tag out
procedure.

Hazardous effects
Electrical shock, damage to equipment, pinch points

Precautions
1. Use the appropriate PPE to protect hands, face and head
2. Use appropriate tools and equipment when performing tasks
3. Proceed with due caution when interacting with live voltage
4. Barricade work are prior to testing with red danger tape
