On Wednesday I was at the pickup line, greeting students and their families to another school day. I was there
for only those few minutes, knowing that I had to leave the school to attend to family matters that were keeping
my son and wife out of their school days because of illness. My break from attending to them was nominal in
time but it was nice to see the students and say “Good Morning” and let everyone know that our rhythms at
school continue to proceed without a pause.
And then out from one of the cars bounded my buddy “B.” He gave me a big hug and asked how I was doing
and how my wife and son were. This third grader was genuinely interested and thoughtful. This made me
smile. After the last car pulled up and the last drop off passenger was tucked in to the warmth of our school
home, I went into my office to check messages and mail.
There, on my desk was a beautifully designed and three-dimensionally framed picture of an owl perched in the
branches of the proud and substantial oak tree. “A’s” multi-colored pasta, used to frame the owl in the tree,
helped to capture the look and feel of what I was seeing right outside my door. I sat back in my chair for a
moment and stared out and pictured a wise owl staring back at me from its roost. It gave me another smile and
a small sense of calm about everything that was taking place this week.
This momentary image reminded me of a quote from Pauline R. Kezer, formerly Connecticut’s Secretary of
State and current Connecticut State University Professor and Vice President of the Katherine Hepburn Cultural
Arts Center-- “Continuity gives us roots; change gives us branches, letting us stretch and grow and reach new
heights.”
In my caretaking absence, everyone stepped up and helped make sure the students didn’t miss a beat. It all goes
on with a sense of aplomb on the faculty’s part and for that I am so appreciative. It reassures all of us that we
have great systems in place, whether I am here physically or working remotely from my house or hospital.
Everyone steps up where needed and when necessary. This, above all, should give us a sense of calm and a
smile for our future.
The Williams School has and always will “…stretch and grow and reach new heights.”
Of that, I am sure.
