Week of January 31, 2011

a weekly publication for the Williams School community

Dear Williams School Families,

On Wednesday I was at the pickup line, greeting students and their families to another school day. I was there
for only those few minutes, knowing that I had to leave the school to attend to family matters that were keeping
my son and wife out of their school days because of illness. My break from attending to them was nominal in
time but it was nice to see the students and say “Good Morning” and let everyone know that our rhythms at
school continue to proceed without a pause.

And then out from one of the cars bounded my buddy “B.” He gave me a big hug and asked how I was doing
and how my wife and son were. This third grader was genuinely interested and thoughtful. This made me
smile. After the last car pulled up and the last drop off passenger was tucked in to the warmth of our school
home, I went into my office to check messages and mail.

There, on my desk was a beautifully designed and three-dimensionally framed picture of an owl perched in the
branches of the proud and substantial oak tree. “A’s” multi-colored pasta, used to frame the owl in the tree,
helped to capture the look and feel of what I was seeing right outside my door. I sat back in my chair for a
moment and stared out and pictured a wise owl staring back at me from its roost. It gave me another smile and
a small sense of calm about everything that was taking place this week.

This momentary image reminded me of a quote from Pauline R. Kezer, formerly Connecticut’s Secretary of
State and current Connecticut State University Professor and Vice President of the Katherine Hepburn Cultural
Arts Center-- “Continuity gives us roots; change gives us branches, letting us stretch and grow and reach new
heights.”

In my caretaking absence, everyone stepped up and helped make sure the students didn’t miss a beat. It all goes
on with a sense of aplomb on the faculty’s part and for that I am so appreciative. It reassures all of us that we
have great systems in place, whether I am here physically or working remotely from my house or hospital.
Everyone steps up where needed and when necessary. This, above all, should give us a sense of calm and a
smile for our future.

The Williams School has and always will “…stretch and grow and reach new heights.”

Of that, I am sure.

Buy Your Best of Live! Ticket (Come on, everyone’s doing it…)
An exciting part of The Williams School annual auction is the opportunity for one lucky winner to select, at the
beginning of the Live Auction, his or her favorite Live Auction item. That item will then become the exclusive
property of the Best of Live! winner. How wonderful is that? Only 50 tickets will be offered for
sale, at the tempting price of $150 per ticket. Limited to one per family, the Best of Live! tickets are NOW ON
SALE and are being sold on a first-come, first-served basis. The tickets can be purchased through the school’s

The drawing will take place at the start of the Live Auction, and you must be present to win. Best of Luck!

Auction Tiles to Honor Those Special to You

Creative hands are hard at work creating keepsake tiles that will be featured on our Moroccan-inspired
Williams School Mosaic wall. Designed to honor a person special to you, whether a student, teacher, parent,
sibling, grandparent, friend or other family member, these colorful tiles will include the name of the honoree
and a sentiment from the donor. An example is pictured on the school’s website,
www.thewilliamsschool.org/auction2011. The tiles are $50 each and may be purchased online, through the
mail or by contacting Jennifer Cahoon at (757) 627-1383 ext. 232 or jcahoon@thewilliamsschool.org.

Color Me Mine Class Projects

The class pottery projects for Kindergarten through Fourth grade, as well as the all-school project, are
complete and are on display in the glass case outside the MPR. The students have done a wonderful job
putting their individual marks on these one-of-kind projects, and we know that it will be hard deciding which
one to take home.

Parent Baskets
At last count, 27 baskets (wait until you see the choices!) have been committed for the Auction, and we are
grateful to everyone who is participating. Please deliver your completed baskets to the 3 rd floor development
office no later than Monday, February 7th. If you would like us to wrap your goodies for you, please deliver
them to the cafeteria between 8:00 and 9:30 on Friday, February 4th. IMPORTANT NOTE: when dropping off
