Assessment of social impact of JNNURM projects in Bhopal City

Abstract
JNNURM is one of the ambitious schemes launched by the Indian Government lasting over
7 years from 2007-12. The scheme is a pilot project covering 63 cities of India, 7 with more
the 4 million population, 28 with 1-4 million population, 28 with less than 1 million. The
annual fund requirement is 17,219.5 crores and 1,20,536 crores overall investment.

Bhopal is one of the identified cities in the population range of 1-4 million population.
Bhopal is one of the fastest growing cities in the country. As per 2001 census, the
population of Bhopal district is 18.38 lakhs out of which 14.35 lakhs live in Bhopal city, in
66 wards, covering a gross area of 285 sq. km. including the lakes and hills.It is one of the
first Cities to get City Development Plan (Feb, 2006) Approved by Govt. of India under
JNNURM. Total financial outlay Rs. 2153.44 Crores of Investment envisaged during 2005-
2012.

The study assess how the JNNURM has affected the lives of people of Bhopal. The
assessment will lead us to conclude that JNNURM has been how much successful in
achieving its goals. What sort of initiatives or measures should government adopt in order
to achieve incomplete goals or what were the pitfalls in the execution of projects. Thus
what steps should be taken in order to achieve the desired outputs.

The assessment will draw out a comparison of social stature of Bhopal before and after
the implementation schemes of JNNURM. Through the assessment we will be able to
draw conclusions about the success of JNNURM projects by looking at the level of
development projected and accomplished during its tenure. The assessment will also
provide the information about projects which has been completed and how it is playing a
vital role in social upgradation of people of Bhopal. The details of the unaccomplished
projects , reasons for their not completion, difficulties faced during the projects and their
level of completion.
