Forms of Nouns
 Singular: One thing or
person is named (boy)
 Singular Possessive: Shows
ownership by one person or
thing. (boy’s)
 Plural: Two or more people
are named (boys)
 Plural Possessive: Shows
ownership by more than one
person or thing (boys’)
Spelling Plurals
 For most nouns, add s to the
singular form Dog, dogs

 Add es to singular nouns


ending with s, x, z, ch, sh
dish, dishes
 If the noun ends with a vowel
followed by ‘y’ add s monkey,
monkeys
 If the noun ends with a consonant
followed by ‘y’, change the ‘y’ to ‘i’
and add -es
* If the word ends in f or fe,
add s to some and others
change the /f/ to /v/ and add
es. Chiefs, wolves
* If the word ends in o, add s
to some and es to others.
Pianos, potatoes
 Irregular
plural forms change the spelling
 Man – men
 Goose – geese
 Mouse – mice
 Some do not change
 Deer – deer
 Sheep – sheep

plural

 Right: The boys ride their
