Maps of the Netherlands

In this document you will find several maps of the Netherlands, to help you establish a rough idea of what is

where. First: just a blank map. This gives you an idea of the shape of the country. In the little side map the

location of the Netherlands in Europe is shown:

The country is roughly 300 kilometers long and 180 kilometers wide.
The following map shows the 12 provinces of the country, and the major cities. You can find Eindhoven

in the South east, close to the Belgian border. The capitals of the provinces are marked in red.

Note that, though Amsterdam is the capital of the country, the Dutch government resides in the Hague.

In 'the rest of the world' the names of 'the Netherlands' and 'Holland' are both used to indicate our country.

Officially however, 'Holland' is the name that is reserved for the two western provinces of the country ('North

Holland' and 'South Holland').

The following map is a 'height map'. In this map, each part of the country is colored depending on the

height it has (relative to the average sea level or 'N.A.P.').

Not that almost 50% of the Netherlands is below sea level, most notably the western and northern part of

the country.
The final map in this document shows the population density in the Netherlands.

The interesting thing is that the western part of the country (one of the lowest parts) is also the part with the

highest population density. Apparently the Dutch managed to keep their feet dry quite effectively!
