A Well-Organized Notebook

The social studies department wrote a SMART goal: To have 100% of our students
show active participation in having and using a well organized notebook; we believe a
high level of organization will lead to improved academic performance and higher
employability skills that students will need and be able to demonstrate in life outside
of high school.

Now I need your help in meeting that goal!

By Monday period 1, you need to have a well-organized 3-ring

notebook. And some paper or a spiral notebook. And a writing
utensil.

In your notebook, you should have:

- our summary work from the beginning of the year

- notes from early exploration
- map work – 50 states and the quiz you took, graded
- timed write on early exploration
- written essays from Thinking Like An Historian project
- grading rubric from that project
- Thomas Jefferson notes and timed write (to go in there when returned)
- notes from writing for news and for radio
o notes
o samples I gave you
o samples you wrote (tea party, own news story)
o draft of your story
o copy of submitted draft if you’ve gotten that far (the FINAL draft that
you used to produce your story – pretty much I know of only 2 people
in the class who are there yet).

I will give a grade on Monday for evidence of this work.

I will periodically ask you for evidence of your notebook throughout the quarter.

At the end of the semester, your semester 1 final will be a reflection and collection of
some of your work as a portfolio and showing your progress on the history
standards and literacy standards.
