PCA (patient controlled

analgesia)
What is it?
• A modified IV line
• Allows user to control amount of opiates going
into their body
• Just press a button for a boost

Why use it?
• Post operative pain relief
• Chronic illness (such as cancer)

Risks

• Can cause an addiction to opiates


• Button can be accidently pressed
• If not properly programmed it can deliver to much
medicine or to little
• Family members should not use the machine for the
patient
Who Should Not Use It? / Contraindications

• Children under 6
• People with an altered mental status
• Elderly

The Concept
• Patients know their pain – doctors can only
make educated guesses
– Different tolerances
– Unreliable pain scale

The Issue
• A small amount of people become addicted to
opiates after use of the PCA – do all the
benefits overshadow the risk of addiction?

Conclusion
• PCA machines should be used only if
– The patient is being monitored regularly
– The patient doesn’t have any drug offences
– They aren’t in the risk group
