    A formal total synthesis of the antibiotic vancomycin was reported. The known aglycon form of vancomycin was protected at the amino group using allyloxycarbonyl succinimide to form an allyloxy-carbonyl derivative. The carboxylate group was then converted to an allyl ester using allyl bromide and potassium bicarbonate. This outlined a synthetic route to produce vancomycin from its aglycon form through protection of the amino group and conversion of the carboxylate group.

    A formal total synthesis of vancomycin has been reported. The known aglycon of
    vancomycin (I) was protected at the amino group as the allyloxy-carbonyl
    derivative (III) using allyloxycarbonyl succinimide (II). Then, carboxylate group
    was converted to allyl ester ( V) with allyl bromide (IV) and KHCO3.
