Introduction

What is RFID ?
– It is an automatic identification method, relying on
storing and retrieving data using electronic tags
( RFID tags)
It makes use of radiowaves.

– Like Bar codes they are used to identify items, but

RFID Tags hold more data than Bar Codes
RFID Tags
RFID tags can be attached to:
Components of RFID
Sequence of Communication
 PC Manages Reader and Issues
Commands
 Reader and tag communicate via RF
signal
 signal generated by the reader
 signal sent out through the
antennas
 signal hits tag
 Tag receives and modifies carrier
signal
 “sends back” modulated signal
 Antennas receive the modulated
signal and send them to the
Reader
 Reader decodes the data
pictorial representation of the System  Results returned to the host
workflow application
Types of RFID tags
Active tags Passive Tags

 have an internal power have no internal power

source, to power microchip supply, the power is supplied
and generate the outgoing
by the reader
signal.

 The tag is expensive to It is cheap to manufacture

manufacture

 It can be read at distances of The tag can be read only at

one hundred feet or more very short distances, typically
a few feet at most
RFID APPLICATIONS

• People Tracking

• Race Timing

• Transportation Payments

• Libraries

• Museum
RFID APPLICATIONS
SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT:

•Asset management
•Production tracking
•Shipping/receiving verification
•Asset condition
•Product recall management
RFID APPLICATIONS

RFID FOR INVENTORY CONTROL

PROBLEMS
• COST ISSUES

TECHNICAL PROBLEMS
• RFID Reader Collision
• RFID Tag Collision

PRIVACY PROBLEMS
• The contents of an RFID tag can be read after the item leaves
the supply chain and without anyone’s knowledge
• RFID tags with unique serial numbers could be linked to an
individual credit card number
