Artifact: CI 451 Web Inquiry

Core Technology Standard 1 - Basic Computer/Technology Operations and Concepts 


The competent teacher will use computer systems to run software; to access, generate,
and manipulate data; and to publish results.  He or she will also evaluate performance of
hardware and software components of computer systems and apply basic trouble-
shooting strategies as needed. 

1. Write a paragraph explaining your knowledge and understanding of the standard—put the

standard into your own words.

I believe this standard wants me to recognize the importance of understanding and using

computer software in the classroom whenever possible to engage students in active learning.

Once the competent teacher learns how to run the software, she will more easily be able to

access websites, create programs to inspire curiosity and evoke the desire to learn, and publish

the results, allowing for online records to be kept and scores to be accessible to both parents

and the teacher. Using computer software to publish results or student work will better inform

instruction to meet the needs of the students. The competent teacher will be able to easily

navigate different computer systems and have knowledge of the different troubleshooting

options when a problem arises.

2. Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and application of the

standard.

your teaching will be impacted by the assignment.


The artifact I chose to demonstrate my understanding and application of the standard is an

online environment web quest geared towards fifth grade students. This artifact demonstrates

my understanding of the standard because I was able to create a student and parent friendly

website that provides the eight environments information, continuing learning activity links, in

depth lesson plans with a focus on literacy, modeling, and strategies to help English Language

Learners, and a resource guide that provides other teachers with an overview of the entire unit.

Through the creation of this website, I have demonstrated knowledge of accessing computer

software, generating a website, and publishing the material to make it accessible to others. This

specific artifact has not been used in my practice, but it would impact my teaching significantly

because it would give students, parents, and administrators access to my website at any point

in time and it would increase motivation because the students are actively engaged in a

program that uses technology, which is especially popular in this day and age.

4. Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to Teach and Learn in a

Diverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard.

I am more prepared to teach and learn in a Diverse Society as a result of meeting Core

Technology Standard 1 because I have created an online web quest that will meet the needs of

all types of learners within my classroom. I have also created lesson plans that take into

consideration the diverse needs of my students ranging from students who need hands on

activities such as modeling to understand the material to the students who do not speak English

as their first language. Creating this artifact has allowed me to think about the diverse needs of

my students and how I can address them using an online computer program.
