CHEMISTRY OF AMINO ACIDS AND

PROTEINS
AMINO ACIDS

Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. Protein molecules are very large with higher molecular
weight ranging 4m 5000---25,00,000. Protein can be broken down into smaller units by hydrolysis. There
small units the monomers of proteins are called amino acids.

If any amino acid become deficient then the synthesis of that particular proteins donot take place.

More than 300 amino acids have been described by only 20 amino acids present in mammalian tissues.

STRUCTURE OF AMINO ACIDS

CLASSIFICATION OF AMINO ACIDS

1. Neutral
2. Acids
3. Basic

Non essential amino acids

The largest group of amino acids that can be further divided into aliphatic, aromatic, hetrocyclic, s-
containing amino acids

 ALIPHATIC-----glycine, alanine, valine, leucine, isoleucine, serine, theorine.

 HETROCYCLIC----tryptophan, histidine
 IMINO ACIDS-----have imino group instead of amino group(-NH)---isoproline,hdroxyproline
 “S” CONTAINING AMINIO ACIDS----tey contain two sulphur----cyctein,methionine.
 ACIDIC-------------they have 2 –COOH groups and one –NH2 group----aspartic acid, glutamic acid.
 BASIC AMINO ACID----the class of amino acids comsists of there amino acids which habe one
-COOH group and 2 –NH2 groups
