Arthropods
• Have jointed legs, segmented bodies, and
some have wings
• They have hard outer coverings called
exoskeletons.
• They obtain oxygen from the air through gills
or air tubes.
• Ex
– Insects, arachnids, crustaceans
Insects
• Have three body regions
– Head
• Antennae
• Eyes
• mouth
– Thorax
• Three pairs of legs
• One or two pairs of wings
• Spiracles for breathing
– Abdomen
• No wings of legs
• Where the reproductive systems are found

• Ex
– Butterflies, flies, grasshoppers, beetles
Arachnid
• Have 2 body regions
– Cephalothorax (head/chest)
– Abdomen
• Four pairs of legs
• No anteannae
• Ex
– Spiders, scorpions, mites, ticks
Crustaceans
• One or two pairs of antennae
• Five pairs of legs
• Mandibles – for crushing food
• Most live in water
• Ex
– Crabs, lobster, crayfish, pill bugs, water fleas
Centipedes and Millipedes
• Many segments
• Centipedes – 1 pair of legs per segment
• Millipedes – 2 pair of legs per segment
