What we’re Learning This Week...

End of the Second Trimes-
ter
 February 21st
Language Arts: This week in reading we will be working on identifying different
No School– President’s Day
genres that stories we read fall in. We will also be studying poetry this week and
learning different techniques poets use with words such as alliteration, idi-
oms, similes, metaphors, and onomatopoeias. We will continue to practice
responding to our reading through writing and using our own connections to
make a clearer meaning of the story. Students will also continue working on
learning different prefixes and suffixes to help strengthen their vocabulary.
In writing we will begin a new unit on persuasive writing. This unit will take us
up to the local writing exams which will be held in early March. For this test
students will need to write a persuasive essay given a prompt. Their essay
needs to have a clear introduction that hooks the reader and states their
opinion, lots of support and details, and a clear conclusion that restates their
opinion.
Math: In math we will begin the week by reviewing mean, median, mode, and
range. We will then spend a few days learning about probability. Students will learn how to list outcomes and find
probability in a variety of situations. We will continue to have a weekly math challenge question which is a word
problem that students will have to solve and give a written explanation on how they solved it.
Science/Social Studies: We will wrap up our unit on chemistry this week in science. Students will complete a
study guide at the beginning of the week. We will then do a few review activities related to our unit. The summa-
tive assessment for chemistry will be on Friday.
