About the Book
This book is the culmination of my many years of traveling the wide open spaces of the western United States. For me
there is nothing more liberating than escaping the crowds to a beautiful out-of-the-way destination. In the early days
when I was dependent on the basic road atlas, a lot more time was spent driving than stopping. Other than National
Parks, National Monuments, and a few other highlights, I didn’t really know what was out there. With the advent of the
internet, my vacation planning became more involved and eventually I would spend weeks planning my travels. The
vacation planning began taking more time than the vacation itself!
When I was younger, camping on the side of the road or sleeping in a rest area was a viable option. However, as I
grew older and had a family to travel with, finding reasonable places to camp before dark took on a greater
significance. Unfortunately, the trusty road atlas only showed a few public campgrounds. All of this eventually led me
to the idea of writing a detailed and easy-to-use travel guide.
During my vacation planning, I found a number of travel books that did an excellent job of explaining attractions in
detail once you were there. Other books were very specific for an area or activity. Some books were broad, yet
incomplete, with too much emphasis on lodging, restaurants and private campgrounds. For my family, the need was to
easily identify and locate interesting attractions and know where to camp. I wanted to write a book that would provide
the following:
The trip through Wyoming was quite interesting and served to further stimulate my interest in writing a book on
Wyoming. Additional research uncovered an abundance of interesting natural, scenic, and historic attractions all
around Wyoming. I created the database, designed the report format, and started plugging in my information. It was
exciting to see the book start to take form. Little did I realize the scope of the project I had undertaken. However, I
stuck with it, spending many weeks of my vacation time traveling around Wyoming and my spare time writing the
book. Eventually, I took a year off work to allow the time needed to finish – 3 years after it all began.
This book will hopefully put to rest the perception that there is nothing but prairie and antelope (pronghorns) outside of
Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. This is most likely the result of driving across the state on I-25 and I-80.
While there is an abundance of prairie and pronghorns, there are also 11 mountain ranges, 2 major National Parks, 2
National Monuments, canyons, badlands, and petroglyphs. Even the plains are sprinkled with dozens of interesting
historic sites, primarily from the pioneer emigration of the 19th century. I have personally driven across Wyoming on
I-80 at least a dozen times before writing this book, and it always did seem disinteresting. But, surprisingly there are
over 20 attractions along or near this route, including hiking, biking, state parks, major historical sites, petroglyphs,
geological areas, and wild horses. You could spend a week exploring just this part of the state!

How to Use the Book
1. Overview
This book is organized by Chapters that correspond to the highways in Wyoming. The highways are listed in
alphabetical order, not by the highway number. For example, US-287 comes before US-30 even though the number
287 is greater than 30. Each Chapter is broken down into Sections for each Attraction and separated by horizontal
lines. Each Section contains the Mile Marker, Attraction Name, Description, and Attributes, which are other pieces
of information used to describe and locate the Attraction.
The book is most easily followed in the direction of increasing mile markers, i.e. reading the book front to back.
However, it is just as likely that a highway will be traveled in reverse order. In this case the book would be followed
from back to front, so keep in mind issues such as referring to "previous" or "next" Sections which refer to the book
from front to back. The "Highway End" Sections include the highway description in reverse order.
The directions in the book are very detailed and basic maps for highway orientation are provided. A free Wyoming
map can be obtained from Wyoming Travel & Tourism or at the visitor centers. It may also be helpful to pick up a
detailed Wyoming road atlas such as the DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer.
2. Header, Footer, and Chapter Title
x The header and footer area on each page displays the Highway, Mile Marker, and Page Number.
x If the page is the beginning of a Chapter, the Highway Name is displayed below the header along with the
direction of the highway. This is determined by the direction in which the Mile Markers increase. The directions
use combinations of the following abbreviations:
N=north, S=south, E=east, W=west, NE=northeast, NW=northwest, SE=southeast, SW=southwest
For example: SW/NE means that the highway travels southwest to northeast.
3. Highway Description and Highway Junctions
x At the start of every chapter is the Highway Description, which describes the highway in general and lists the
most notable attractions. These noted attractions allow you to quickly determine which highways are the most
interesting.
x Following the Highway Description are additional highway descriptions and directions for any connecting
highways. This provides an overview of the connecting highways without turning to the individual chapters. These
connecting highways are normally only relevant if following the book from back to front.
x At the end of every chapter is the End of Highway, which describes the highway in general, in reverse order, and
lists the most notable attractions. In some cases where the highway has several name changes, the highway
names will be reversed in order to display the highways in the correct order when traveling in the reverse
direction. For example: the chapter for Wy-134 & Wy-133 displays as Wy-133 & Wy-134.
x Preceding the End of Highway are additional highway descriptions and directions for any connecting highways.
This provides an overview of the connecting highways without turning to the individual chapters. These connecting
highways are normally only relevant if following the book from front to back.
x Additional connecting highways can appear at any point along the highway.
x All connecting highways and are signified by "(see chapter)" after the highway name along with a "Type" of Hwy
Junction w/Chapter or Hwy Transition w/Chapter. A "transition" is where the highway continues straight but the
highway name changes.
4. Highway Naming
There are 4 different types of highway and road naming in the state of Wyoming:
x US-00 U.S. highways that run between states and are always paved.
x Wy-00 Wyoming state highways that end at the state line and are always paved.
x CR-00 County roads that change names between county lines and are generally gravel. These roads often
are also named and have a street sign.
x FR-00 National Forest roads that are generally gravel or dirt. These roads often transition from a county road
at the National Forest boundary.
In many cases, two or more U.S. and Wyoming highways share common sections. In these cases the names are
combined and separated by slashes, e.g. US-287/Wy-789. When multiple U.S. highways are combined, the "US-"
prefix appears once, with the numerically sorted highway numbers separated by slashes, e.g. US-14/16/20. An
extreme example is Wy-789, which runs south to north from Colorado to Montana and is shared with 6 U.S. highways.
These combinations of highways are named Wy-789, US-287/Wy-789, US-26/Wy-789, US-20/Wy-789,
US-16/20/Wy-789, US-14/16/20/Wy-789, and US-310/Wy-789.
5. Attributes
Each Section is comprised of Attributes, which are the individual pieces of information that define the Attraction at
the specified Mile Marker. The majority of these Attributes are defined textually; however, some are defined using a
1 to 6 star Rating System from low to extra high and defined as follows:
* Low
** Low/Medium
*** Medium
**** Medium/High
***** High
****** Extra High (only used for Cool Rating and only given in a few cases)
5
5.1 Attraction Attributes
MM: Highway Mile Marker to the tenth of a mile
x Some highways and routes have no mile markers. For these cases the book displays the distances from both
the start and the end of the highway separated by a slash. Using this convention on a 15.0 mile highway, the
start is displayed as MM: 0/15 and the end as MM: 15/0. Mile 8.0 would be displayed as MM: 8.0/7.0, meaning
8.0 mi from the start and 7.0 mi from the end. To keep track of the mileages, the odometer can be zeroed out
at either end of the highway.
x In a few cases the mile markers end along a route, but the route continues, e.g. a highway that enters a
National Park. In this case, the mile markers will be shown both as if they did not run out, followed by starting
at zero at the point where they did run out. For example, if the mile markers on a 15 mi route end at MM 7.0,
with an entrance station at MM 7.8, the MM at the entrance station would display as MM: 7.8 (0.0/7.2). The
entry at MM 10 would display as MM: 10.0 (2.2/4.8). In this example the odometer could be zeroed out at the
beginning of the route, with the first part of the MM used for the entire route. Alternatively, the mile markers
could be followed up to MM 7.8, where the odometer would be zeroed out and the second part of the MM (in
parenthesis) would be used.
Dist: Distance to the Attraction from the main highway
GPS: GPS coordinates of the parking area or entrance for the Attraction
GPS2: Optional GPS coordinates of the physical Attraction, if it is not at the parking area
Elev: Elevation of the Attraction
Grid: Used for estimating a location on the maps in the book or any physical map by a percentage to the right and down
from the upper left corner. 0/0 is the upper left, 100/100 is the lower right, and 50/50 is the center. For example,
Casper has a Grid of 67/55, which means it is 67% to the right and 55% down.
Land: The entity that owns or manages the land where the Attraction is located. Some are abbreviated:
BLM - Bureau of Land Management
LDS - Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormon Church)
NF - National Forest
NM - National Monument
NPS - National Park Service
Wyoming G & F - Wyoming Game and Fish
Attraction: The name of the place of interest at the specified Mile Marker. Under each Attraction is its description.
Type: The type/category of the Attraction, e.g. Hiking Trail, Historic Site, Campground, etc.
Hours: Hours and days that the Attraction is open, if limited. Unless otherwise stated, all hours are applicable 7 days a
week
Crowds: How crowded is the attraction? Rated from 1 - 5 stars (uncrowded=1, crowded=5)
Cool How cool is attraction (based on the author's opinion)? Rated from 1 - 6 stars (1 = not cool, 6=Extra Cool).
Rating: Combine this with the distance to travel to an attraction to help determine if it is worth your time.
[FEE AREA] This is displayed when a fee is charged
Time: The approximate time required to visit the Attraction, not counting driving time
Road Desc: The description of the road surface, conditions, and restrictions. Unless otherwise noted:
x All roads are paved and smooth
x All gravel roads are reasonably smooth
Directions: Detailed directions to the Attraction from the main highway
x The directions use the following abbreviations: N=north, S=south, E=east, W=west, L=left, R=right. These
are sometime combined, e.g. SW/L means southwest and left.
x Since Interstate Highway exit ramps can be several tenths of a mile apart, the mileages are measured from
the exit ramp closest to the direction being driven
Nearest Number of miles to drive and the direction to the nearest town. For example:
Town: Casper 14 NW (says Casper is 14 mi NW of the Attraction)
Most Attractions do not include a nearest town, because the town is already listed as an Attraction at another Mile
Marker. If there is not a "nearest town" at a highway junction, it means that the junction is already at a town.
6
6. Conventions
x When you see a tilde in front of a number, this is shorthand for "approximately", e.g. "~10 mi" is the same as
"approximately 10 miles".
x If an Attraction is followed by "(heading …)", e.g. (heading north), (heading southwest), etc., this means that the
Attraction is only applicable if heading in that direction.
7. Restrictions
x There are no photos included in this book. Grayscale picture do not do justice to the beauty of Wyoming, plus they
raise the price of the book. To see a fine collection of Wyoming photos, along with additional maps and
information, see the website at:
www.wyomingroadtripbythemilemarker.com
x This book is not meant to be a comprehensive hiking guide. The book provides some of the better day hikes that
are near the main highway while making the reader aware of longer trails that have trailheads near the main
highways.
8. Abbreviations
x ft - Feet
x mi - Mile
x sq - square, e.g. sq ft (square feet), sq mi (square miles)
x yds - Yards

Miner's Delight Ghost Town Type: Historic Site
Established as a gold mining camp in 1867 along with its sister camps Atlantic City and South Pass City. The camp was
originally named Hamilton City but was known as Miner's Delight, which was the name of the largest mine in the area. The name
was later officially changed. At its peak the town had 75 residents, but that number fell dramatically as gold mining became non-
cost effective in future years. In 1874 the mine shut down but reopened a short time later. The mine was shut down again in 1882
and the town was abandoned. The town was revived when there was an attempt to resume mining in 1907. During the Depression
some of the abandoned cabins were occupied by the jobless, and the town was inhabited as late as 1960. Adjacent to the parking
area is an old cemetery, which contains a single headstone for a person that lived from 1837-1875. The remainder of the cemetery
has some iron fences filled with sagebrush and young trees. A 1/4 mi trail passes 10 unrestored structures that are still standing
from the 1907 period.

established as a town in 1868 and since has experienced a continuing series of mining booms and busts, all but one tied to the
fortunes of gold. A brochure provides a detailed history of the town plus a 27 stop self-guided walking tour (including possibly the

Casper Mountain Rd/Wy-251 Type: Highway Description
18.4 mi series of roads from Casper south over Casper Mountain (nearly 3,000 ft above Casper) down through the Red Valley
and up to Muddy Mountain. Activities on Casper Mountain include camping, hiking, and mountain biking, as well as downhill and
cross-country skiing in the winter. Much of Casper Mountain is private property; however, Casper Mountain Park is a large public
access area with 5 campgrounds. Highlights include: Garden Creek Falls, Bridle Trail, scenic overlook of Casper, Casper
Mountain Park, Crimson Dawn Park and Museum, Muddy Mountain Environmental Education Area.
Notes: The roads up and down the mountains are steep and winding and few of the campsites accommodate large RVs and
trailers. After reaching the top of Casper Mountain from Casper, the road narrows with no center stripe and eventually becomes
gravel.
Directions: At the intersection of E 1st St/US-20/26/87 and S Wolcott St/Wy-251, head south 8.9 mi (the first 2 blocks are one-way
so stay in the 2 right lanes), where you will first gradually and then steeply climb to the top of Casper Mountain. At a fork with
Hogadon Rd are 3 direction and mileage signs to the area attractions. Veer left where the highway transitions to CR-505, narrows
with no center stripe, and continues 2 mi to the high point of 8,000 ft at MM 10.9. The pavement ends at MM 11.9 and the road
descends into the Red Valley where CR-505 turns west at MM 13.9. At this point a junction with Muddy Mountain Rd (elev 7260)
continues south and climbs to the top of Muddy Mountain (elev 8274).

Garden Creek Falls & Bridle Trail Type: Waterfall
A 50 ft high waterfall in Rotary Park at the base of Casper Mountain. This is one of only a few waterfalls in central Wyoming and
is most spectacular in spring and early summer. The first trail option is just before the bridge that crosses Garden Creek. A short
100 yd trail south leads to a midrange view of the falls. Across the bridge is another trail that follows the creek uphill 0.1 mi south to
the base of the falls. A more strenuous option is to veer right from the footbridge to the 4.5 mi Bridle Trail. This trail loops around
the entire park, climbing over 700 ft up switchbacks for good views, and passes through the "split rock" at the top. Much of the trail
is adjacent to private property so stay on the trail.
A picnic area is located along a partial loop road south of the parking area. The area looks like a campground but is a day use
area. 7 sites. Grills. Fire rings.

The park is quite popular through the 4th of July weekend after which the reservoir is drained to remove silt deposits and provide
water for downstream irrigation demands. This process is known as "the silt run," and by around August 1 the reservoir is filled

Museum, Brimmer Point, and The Castle. Over 12 mi of trails are accessible from Skyline Drive. A trail sign is located at the

Completed in 1927, this earthen dam is 135 ft high and 560 ft wide. Just to the south of the dam a short road descends to the end
of the spillway with a day use area, picnic shelter, and restroom. The reservoir is drained to the river level right after the 4th of July
weekend to remove silt deposits and provide water for downstream irrigation demands. This process, known as "the silt run,"
releases massive amounts of water through the spillway and is quite impressive. The spillway may also be releasing water early in

This section of the historic Sun Ranch near Martin's Cove was purchased by the Mormon Church and opened to visitors in the
late 1990s. The old ranch house has been converted to a visitor center, which contains historical displays and artifacts from the
Sun Ranch. The visitor center is staffed by members of the Mormon Church who explain the history of the handcart companies.
The ranch site also contains other historic buildings. A 4.9 mi round-trip hike leads to Martin's Cove, and handcarts are available
to provide the true pioneer experience.
Devil's Gate is on BLM land and is accessible via a 0.9 mi (one-way) hiking trail. The trail starts at the visitor center and follows
the Martin's Cove trail just past the bridge over the Sweetwater River before splitting off and heading east. An interpretive sign is

Devil's Gate Historic Site Type: Historic Site
Devil's Gate is a split in a ridge called the Sweetwater Rocks, which was created by volcanic activity and eroded by the
Sweetwater River leaving a narrow gorge 300 ft deep and 1,500 ft in length. This was a major geographical landmark on the
Oregon Trail and was visible from 15 mi east. The trail passed to the south; however, many emigrants camped near Devil's Gate
and explored the gorge, some leaving inscriptions on the walls.
This historic site is 3/4 mi southwest of the gorge, providing views along a 1/3 mi paved interpretive loop trail. Devil's Gate is on
BLM land and is accessible via a 0.9 mi hiking trail that starts at the Mormon Handcart Visitor Center 0.7 mi west on Wy-220

Independence Rock State Historic Site Type: Historic Site
This famous landmark is 1 of 3 major sites along the Oregon Trail where emigrants left inscriptions (the others being Register Cliff
and Names Hill). This large granite dome is approximately 100 ft high, 200 yds wide, and 600 yds long. It was clearly visible from
Prospect Hill to the east and was a favorite emigrant campsite. This is the best of the 3 sites, where the best-preserved
inscriptions are found by climbing to the top of the rock. An estimated 50,000 names are etched on the rock with the oldest known
from 1824. A common theory is the rock got its name from an Independence Day celebration held here in 1830 (although the
plaque on the rock says 1825). It was also thought that the emigrants needed to reach this point by Independence Day in order to
reach Oregon on schedule. On the way into the site from the rest area are several interpretive panels about Independence Rock
and the westward migration. Several plaques and markers are located on the east side of the rock inside a fence. A 1.0 mi footpath
circles the rock where a few inscriptions can be seen without climbing. Located at mile 815 of the Oregon Trail.

Granite Canyon and returning to Teton Village on the Valley Trail.
Other summer activities at the village and on the lower mountain include hiking, mountain biking, fishing, horseback riding, a
climbing wall, and a kid's camp. The Teewinot Chairlift to the lower mountain provides easy access to 7 mi of single track trails
augmented with a dual track system that offers 15 different mountain bike trails.

Upon entering the geyser basin, the walking path passes a small bookstore and through a stone archway designed as a gateway
to the overlooks and trails of the geyser basin. This archway is part of the Norris Geyser Basin Museum, one of the park's
original trailside museums opened to the public in 1930. The rustic architecture is an excellent example of the stone and log
architecture of the period. The museum is now a National Historic Landmark. It contains a staffed information desk and several
exhibits related to the Norris area's geothermal wonders. Ranger-led programs are offered several times each day. A trail
brochure provides a map and detailed descriptions of the main features.
Porcelain Basin to the north is named for the milky color of the mineral deposits and is the fastest changing area. The 3/4 mi trail
from the Norris Geyser Basin Museum drops into a vast, nearly treeless, open terrain with hundreds of densely packed
geothermal features and colorful runoff areas. Highlighted features: Congress Pool, Whirligig Geyser, Whale's Mouth,
Crackling Lake, and Blue Geyser.
Back Basin to the south is in stark contrast with thermal features scattered around a 1.5 mi trail in a forested terrain. Highlighted
features: Steamboat Geyser - The world's tallest active geyser, but major eruptions are rare. Minor eruptions can reach 40 ft.
Cistern Spring - Linked to Steamboat Geyser, this pool constantly overflows depositing up to 1/2 in of gray sinter around the lip
per year. Echinus Geyser - The largest frequently active acid geyser in the world. Eruptions used to be predictable before 1997,
but it now erupts a few times a day, 40-60 ft for 4 min. Porkchop Geyser - The geyser exploded on September 5 1989, throwing
rocks surrounding the vent more than 216 ft and turning it into a hot spring. Minute Geyser - Used to erupt every minute before its
larger vent was clogged with rocks tossed in by early visitors.

Museum of the National Park Ranger Type: Museum
The U.S. Army arrived in Yellowstone in 1886 to protect the park from poaching, vandalism, souvenir collecting, and forest fires.
They stayed until 1916, when the job was turned over to the National Park Service. This museum is dedicated to the men and
women who have served as stewards of America's national parks, beginning from these military roots to their present-day roles.
Inside are historical exhibits, including photographs, uniforms, equipment, and a 25 minute laser-disc historical documentary
"American Legacy." The building stands on the site of the original 1886 soldier station, which was replaced after a fire in 1897 and
modified in 1908. After the National Park Service took over, the building was used as a ranger station until being destroyed by an
earthquake in 1959. It was restored in 1991 to reflect the station's original layout. The museum is staffed by retired National Park
Service staff.

Let someone else do the work so you can enjoy
the hidden beauty of Wyoming…
Most travel guides are written to explain tourist attractions in detail once you are already there, providing only minimal
directions, and are cumbersome to use while on the road. With that in mind, what is the best way to plan a road trip
across Wyoming?
The old answer was: Hours of research and planning.
The new answer is: Make Wyoming Road Trip by the Mile Marker your official guide.
This remarkable book has the entire state of Wyoming laid out by the highway mile markers. Brief descriptions explain
what is ahead, and detailed directions and GPS coordinates guide you to the exact location.
Everyone knows Wyoming is the home of Yellowstone National Park, the first and most spectacular National Park
in the country; however, Wyoming has so much more to offer if you know where to look. From rolling prairie, to
badlands, to deep forests, to high mountain lakes, and breathtaking peaks, Wyoming’s diverse landscape is second to
none. In addition, the Wyoming plains contain a rich history of pioneer trails that served as the gateway to the west
