Assignment 3; part 1
+ assigned 02.08.11

Assignment3
AThis exercise is an exploration of collages and vector lines. The purpose is to understand the general concept of a
lineweight through extraction and abstraction of profile and shadow lines. This is a two part assignment because the
first part will entail a collage of a building of your choice followed by the general concept of the building delivered in a
vector-base output composition.

Part I:
You are to go to the architecture library (9th floor) and research a building of your choice (only one building). You will
be required to scan between 5-10 images only of that one building. While scanning the images, pay close attention to
material, details, and shadow lines. These buildings can be found in most books and in the Architecture Record maga-
zine. Use the KIP SCANNER or the scanners next to the computers to scan the images. Save them to a discrete folder
and prepare for the collage part. When you produce the collage, it is important that you examine the building and reveal
one thing that is consistent throughout the project. For example; in Falling Water by Frank Lloyd Wright, there are sev-
eral images available. The overall structure has this horizontal quality about it because of its flat roof, overhangs, and
balcony’s that protrude from the site. So one could assemble the collage base on horizontal movement as it become
projected from the surface.

This is a good time to use all of the skills learned from the previous weeks and create a stunning collage using architec-
ture. Remember, do not attempt to reconstruct the building, this collage will have a variety of “randomness” to the over-
all new composition you create.

This is due Monday, Feb 15th.
