    Predisposing factors for uterine fibroids include age, gender, race, lifestyle, early menarche, nulliparity, and use of oral contraceptives. Precipitating factors are hormone replacement therapy and anovulation or luteal insufficiency. The etiology of uterine fibroids is unknown. Without treatment, estrogen dominance can cause proliferation of cells in the uterus, overgrowth of the endometrial lining, and development of uterine fibroids. Common symptoms include swelling of the breasts, depression, loss of sexual drive, dysmenorrhea, and hypermenorrhea.
