BACKGROUNDS AND ORIGINS
• Founded in the year 1469 in Punjab, by “Guru Nanak
Dev Ji”.
• Nanak and his Nine Successor known as the “Gurus”.
• Followers Known as the Sikhs.
• The Holy Book is “Guru Granth Sahib”.
• Name and title – Sikh male carries the name
“Singh”(Lion) & Female carries the name
“Kaur”(Lioness/ Princess).
SIKHISM INCLUDES.
• Universal acceptance of God.
• Belief in one God.
• The name of God is Truth- “Sat Nam”.
• Equality of all persons.
• Equality of the sexes.
• The temple is known as the “Gurdwara”
ONE GOD

Sikh’s primary belief.


• “Guru Granth Sahib” – states that “There is only one
supreme lord god ; there is no other at all”.
• Guru Ram Das, the Fourth Sikh Guru explain “All
living beings are yours”
FIVE SIGNS OF FAITH
• Kirpan – A small size of sword.
• Kara - An iron bangle worn.
• Kachera – Similar like sword / Khanjar.
• Kanga - A small wooden comb.
• Kesh - Hair.
5 weapons & 5 THIVES OF SIKH’S.
• Lust - Kam.
• Anger – Krodh.
• Greed – Lobh.
• Attachment – Moh.
• Ego - Ahankar.
• Humility- Nimrata.
• Compassion – Daya.
• Truth – Sat.
• Contentment – Santokh.
• Love.
LANGUAGE AND
COMUNICATION
• All Sikhs are fluent in English & Punjabi.
• Written Script – “Gurmukhi”.
• Government agency staff provides TIS on telephone.
