ABSTRACT

The project is a study of two types of retaining walls namely, Gabion

wall and Reinforced Earth Retain wall and their feasibility at a particular
site based on soil properties and site conditions.

It also involves the study of the design of both retaining walls and
application of the design procedure at the respective sites.
INTRODUCTION

Gabions are wire structures, in essence large baskets that are filled with
rock or masonry material to form large blocks for structures such as
retaining walls. They have the advantage of being extremely rugged
and relatively cheap for the large areas they can buttress. Gabion walls
can be small or large in scale and function like gravity retaining walls

A geosynthetic performs the reinforcement function by improving the

mechanical properties of a soil mass as a result of its inclusion. When
soil and geosynthetic reinforcement are combined, a composite
material, ‘reinforced soil’, possessing high compressive and tensile
strength (and similar, in principle, to the reinforced concrete) is
produced.

WORKS COMPLETED

The 2 sites were visited and undisturbed samples were collected using
large diameter samplers. Properties of the soil samples of both sites
were found out by laboratory testing. With the help of these properties
the reason for failure at site1 were studied and established. The sites
were visited again and the measurements required for the construction
of the retaining walls were taken.
