Bevel gears can be used to change the direction of drive in a gear system by 90 degrees. A good example is seen as the
main mechanism for a hand drill. As the handle of the drill is turned in a vertical direction, the bevel gears change the
rotation of the chuck to a horizontal rotation.

A TYPICAL HAND DRILL ENLARGED VIEW OF THE BEVEL GEARS OF A HAND DRILL MECHANISM

The bevel gears in a hand drill have the added advantage of increasing the speed of rotation of the chuck and this makes it
possible to drill a range of materials.

An alternate form of bevel gears are seen below. These are lightweight and manufactured from nylon. Nylon gears are
normally used in electrical equipment such as DVD players.

With the aid of diagrams and notes explain how a bevel gear is used as part of a mechanism/machine you have seen or used.
