Essay Introduction

This investigation will explore the relationship between story and structure and to what extent there
is an absence in surrealist film. By looking at the influential work Luis Bunuel’s ‘Phantom of Liberty’
by analysing its use of camera movements, editing and order of scenes, an understanding of the
film’s structure and story can be found. Supporting evidence from Bunuel’s other films like ‘Un chein
d’adealu,’ and ‘Object of Desire’ will give a greater understanding to his particular techniques.
Surrealist films like Bunuel’s has influenced other films like Looking at books such as Surrealism :
desire unbound (J. Mundy) and The discreet art of Luis Buñuel : a reading of his films (G, Edwards,1937) is
useful to give an insight into the symbolic intentions behind his work. The audiences’ interpretations
of the film from online article reviews will show how the story is perceived and how they react
towards it.
