1.

1 INTRODUCTION
The Indian School of Mines (ISM), established in 1926, is a Deemed University (since 1967), fully funded by the Ministry
of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. ISM is located in Dhanbad, the heart of major Indian
coalfields, in the state of Jharkhand. It offers B.Tech, Dual-degree (B.Tech & M.Tech), Integrated M.Sc/MSc Tech,
MSc/MScTech, M.Tech, MPhil, MBA and Ph.D in various areas of Engineering: Computer, Electrical, Electronics,
Environmental, Fuel, Industrial, Mechanical, Mineral, Mining, Mining Machinery, Petroleum; Humanities;
Management and Science: Chemistry, Geology, Geophysics, Physics and Mathematics. It has been focusing its academic
and research activities on various aspects of industry. The ISM has maintained its all India character drawing faculty and
students from all over India. It occupies a unique position, not only in India but also in Asia Pacific, and has contributed to
the development of mineral sector substantially.
The ISM offers state-of-the-art facilities for advance studies and research. These facilities include:
- A Modern Lecture Hall Complex
- Library with over 1,20,000 books & Journals,
- A computer centre equipped with internet facility. In addition, each Department has its own computer
laboratories with internet facility.
- Executive Development Centre with modern teaching aid facility.
- Separate hostels for boys and girls with computer facility within the campus.
- Health Centre, Canteen, Captive Generator, Sports, Recreational facilities etc.
1.2 M.Tech/ M.Phil and Ph.D Programme:
The aim of Master of Technology/Master of Philosophy programmes is to train the students in high level of theoretical
knowledge enabling them to tackle practical complex problems in industrial fields as well as to pursue further academic
achievements through research. Enough flexibility is provided in the structure of the programme in respect of lecture
courses, laboratory, field work and project work to help the students to achieve the above mentioned aim. The departments
are equipped with sufficient facilities for this purpose. To provide opportunity for carrying out research work, leading to
Ph.D degree, the ISM provides Junior Research Fellowship (JRF).
The JRF Scheme is currently available to the Post Graduates/ Graduates in Engineering and PG/M.Phil.in Science,
Humanities/Management for undertaking Ph.D research work in the discipline of Engineering: Computer, Electrical,
Electronics & Instrumentation, Environmental, Fuel, Industrial Engineering & Management, Mechanical, Mineral,
Mining, Mining Machinery, and Petroleum; Science: Applied Geology/Geophysics/Physics/ Chemistry/Mathematics,
Environmental Science, Computer Science; Humanities and Social Science and Management. The selected JRFs are
required to register for Ph.D programme within one month of joining and to pay the required tuition fees and other charges
on the date of registration, failing which the selection will stand cancelled.
1.2.1 COURSE CURRICULUM
The M.Tech and M.Phil programmes follow semester based system for evaluation of students' performance. M.Tech
programmes are of four semester duration and M.Phil programmes are of two semester duration. In M.Tech programmes, 1st
two semesters are devoted to class room teaching and during 3rd and 4th semester a student has to complete a project work and
in case of M.Phil Programmes, 1st semester is devoted to class room teaching and the student has to complete a project work
during the second semester.
1.2.2 ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENT
To appear in the semester examination M.Tech and M.Phil programme, each student is required to have at least 75%
attendance in each subject.
1.3 DISCIPLINE
Students are required to observe prescribed Rules & Regulations and orders issued by the ISM authorities from time to time.
1.4 PROGRAMME FEE
The fee structure for M.Tech/M.Phil/Ph.D programmes, payable at the time of registration/admission are presented in the
following table. The fee should be paid by demand draft drawn in favour of Registrar, Indian School of Mines, and
payable at Dhanbad.

In addition to above the students are required to pay additional amount towards accidental insurance and institute blazer, as
per actual, at the time of admission. The fees structure is subject to change from time to time. However, the exact fee
structure will be notified at the time of admission.
1.5 a. SCHOLARSHIP (For M.Tech/M.Phil programme)
The scholarship will be offered to those students who have qualified GATE (for M.Tech programme) NET (for M.Phil
programme) examination. However, a GATE/NET qualified student does not automatically eligible to receive scholarship.
The scholarship will be offered to the students on the basis of merit in the respective category. NON-GATE/NON-
NET/SPONSORED candidates are not eligible for scholarship.
b. FELLOWSHIP (for Ph.D)
The ISM Junior Research Fellowships is Rs.14000/- for first two years and Rs.15000/- for next two years (consolidated)
per month for M.Tech/M.Phil/MBA degree holders and Rs. 12000/- for first two years and Rs.14000/- for next two years
(consolidated) per month for B.Tech/ M.Sc./ M.Sc.Tech/ MA degree holders. The contingency expenses will be allowed
upto Rs.30,000/- per annum with the prior approval from Guide & Head of Department.
At the end of each year the work done by the Junior Research Fellow would be assessed as per the prescribed rules. The
fellowship may be withdrawn if the work carried out by the Fellow is not found satisfactory. No extension of fellowship
beyond fourth year shall be given in any case.
1.6 ADMISSION PROCEDURE
1.6.1 APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION
Detailed application form for different programmes alongwith eligibility criteria may be downloaded from the website
www.ismdhanbad.ac.in from 18th January, 2010, or may be obtained from Assistant Registrar(Acad), I.S.M. Dhanbad-
826004 by sending a self addressed unstamped envelope of size 23cms x 15cms alongwith a demand draft of Rs 550/- for
M.Tech/M.Phil programme (Rs. 1050/- for Ph.D programme) drawn in favor of Registrar, Indian School of Mines,
Dhanbad from 18th January, 2010 to 19th March, 2010. The application form can also be obtained in person from ISM cash
counter by paying Rs. 500 for M Tech/ M Phil Programme and Rs. 1000/- for PhD programme from 18th January 2010 to
26th March 2010. The downloaded application form should be sent along with a demand draft of Rs. 500/- (for M Tech/M
Phil) and Rs. 1000/- (for PhD).
Last date for submission of application form is April 2, 2010.
You must write your Name, Programme and Category on reverse side of the Demand Draft.
The details of Demand Draft are to be written in the application form.
1.6.2 ELIGIBILITY
M.Tech/M.Phil Programmes
Candidates of all categories should possess minimum of 55% marks (without rounding off) or equivalent grade in aggregate
of the qualifying degree as mentioned in Table 2.1 “Details of Programmes” of Information Brochure from the Institute
recognized by UGC/AICTE. However, for admission to M.Phil (English) candidates under SC/ST Categories are eligible
with 50% marks (without rounding off) or equivalent grade in MA English. Requirement of minimum percentage of marks
may be waived off for the teachers who have joined the teaching profession on or before February 28, 1993.
The eligibility criteria for different disciplines are presented in Table 2.1 of this brochure. Candidates who have appeared
in the qualifying examination may also apply for admission. However, they will be required to submit their final
result of the qualifying examination latest by 30th September, 2010 failing which their admission will be cancelled.
The candidates whose final results are not declared, the weightage will be considered upto 7th Semester or pre final stage.
However, it is desirable that the candidate fulfils all the academic requirement at the time of admission, except the
declaration of result. In all cases students are required to fulfil the attendance requirements as per rules.
Ph.D. Programme:
The eligibility criteria, total number of fellowship for the ISM JRF (Ph.D) Programme is given in Table 2.2. However, all
JRFs will be governed by the ISM Ph.D. rules prevailing at that time.
Candidates who have appeared in the qualifying examination may also apply for admission. However, they will be
required to submit their final result of the qualifying examination latest by 30th September, 2010 failing which their
admission will be cancelled.
1.6.3 SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION FORM
M Tech/ M Phil/ Ph.D Programmes
The duly filled in prescribed Application Form should be accompanied with the following documents.
a) A recent passport size photograph should be, pasted on application form, Admit Card and Verification Card.
b) 5 (five self-addressed unstamped envelopes of size 16 cms X 24 cms to be enclosed alongwith application
form.
c) NON-GATE/NON-NET/SPONSORED Candidates are required to fill in the admit and verification
cards also.
d) Prescribed application fee.
e) OBC (Non-creamy layer) candidates are also required to attach duly filled Appendix-I of the brochure
with the application form.
f) The NON-GATE M. Tech candidates have to mention the discipline (Refer Table 2.1 of information
brochure) in which they want to appear for Written Test in application form, admit card and
verification card. Please note that this discipline would be considered as first option for their admission
at the time of councelling.
Application fee once paid will not be refundable under any circumstances.
Note: The original certificates along with two sets of self attested copies of the certificates and marksheets (including valid
GATE/NET score) starting Matriculation/School final examination are to be produced at the time of counselling and
admission. However, Original Migration Certificate is required at the time of admission only.
Programme Fee for the first semester has to be paid at the time admission. Caution money and security deposits are
refundable only after completion of the programme. Fees for subsequent semesters are to be paid before the commencement
of the respective semesters.
The duly filled-in application form must reach the Assistant Registrar (Academic), Indian School of Mines,
Dhanbad-826004 latest by April 02, 2010.
1.6.4 ADMISSION PROCEDURE
I. M Tech / M Phil Programmes
a. The admission to M.Tech for GATE qualified candidates should be held through counselling.
b. The admission to M Tech for NON-GATE candidates will be based on the basis of All India Entrance
Examination conducted by ISM on May 16, 2010 (Sunday) followed by counselling.
c. The admission to M Phil for NET GATE qualified candidates should be held through interview held at ISM.
d. The admission to M Phil Programmes for NON-NET/GATE candidates will be based on the basis of All
India Entrance Examination conducted by ISM on May 16, 2010 (Sunday) followed by interview. The
weightage of the written test and interview would be 70:30.
e. The All India written test for NON-GATE/NON-NET/SPONSORED candidates will be held on May
16, 2010 at Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Dhanbad, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkatta, New Delhi and
Varanasi from 9.00 AM- 12.00 Noon The allotment of the centre will be the sole discretion of ISM . The
medium of examination is English.
f. Details syllabus would be provided to the candidate alongwith the admit card and would also be uploaded on
ISM website.
g. The pattern of question paper would be as follows:
M Tech
Part A (40 marks) Objective Type: The questions should be basically on elementary science, elementary
engineering and computer science (Duration 1 hour).
Part B (60 marks) Long Answer/Short Answer Type: There would be 10 questions each of 6 marks for each
discipline and all questions would be compulsory (Duration 2 hours).
M Phil (English)
Part A (40 marks) Objective Type: Questions should be based on the basis of the entrance examination syllabus
(Duration 1 hour).
Part B (60 marks) Long Answer/Short Answer Type: There would be 10 questions each of 6 marks and all
questions would be compulsory (Duration 2 hours).
M Phil (Applied Physics/ Applied Chemistry/ Applied Mathematics)
Question paper would contain 10 questions each of 10 marks and all questions would be compulsory (Duration 3
hours).
RESERVATION
a) Reservation for SC/ST/OBC/PC candidates will be as per Government of India directive/guidelines
circulated from time to time, in each programme.
b) One seat is reserved in each discipline for Physically Challenged (PC) candidate subject to maximum of 3%
within the respective category.
c) One seat each of M.Tech and M.Phil is kept reserved for Jammu and Kashmir (JK) migrants as
supernumerary seat.
d) Some seats (Please see table 2.1) are reserved for sponsored candidates with minimum 2 year experience in
the relevant field of reputed organizations.
e) One seat of M.Tech and M.Phil programme is reserved for Parsi (PS) candidate and one seat for ward/widow
or dependents of Defence personnel (DP) (all category) including ex-servicemen as per Govt of India rules,
provided they fulfil eligibility criteria and qualify in the corresponding test.
II. Ph.D Programme:
1. Junior Research Fellowship is open to candidates below the age of 30 years (35 years for women, PC, SC &
ST) as on 1st Jan, 2010 who have obtained first class or equivalent grade at the Postgraduate / Undergraduate
(Engg.) level in the relevant discipline of Science/ Engineering / Management. Physically Challenged (PC)
candidates may not be considered for field related research areas / Departments.
The medium of instruction and research paper publication / reporting will be only in English.
Therefore, the scholars are required to possess adequate knowledge of English.

3. Selection of ISM JRF, for GATE/NET qualified candidate would be based on the interview. Those who have
not qualified GATE/NET will have to qualify in the written test. Written test would be of three hours duration,
of 100 marks, and will contain objective/subjective questions from the subject concerned (pl see Table 2.2).
Detailed syllabus would be provided to the candidate alongwith the admit card.
4. The All India written test for NON-GATE/NON-NET candidates will be held on May 16, 2010 at
Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Dhanbad, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkatta, New Delhi and Varanasi from 9.00 AM-
12.00 Noon. The medium of examination is English.
5. Date and time of interview would be notified later on.
1.7 SPONSORSHIP
With a view to encourage persons working in Industries, the Institute admits a limited number of sponsored candidates to
the M.Tech/M.Phil Programme. It is expected that such candidates after successfully completing the programme, are better
equipped to work in organizations sponsoring them. The admission procedure for sponsored candidates will be as follows:
a) They must be from recognized Industrial Organization/Academic Institutions.
b) Minimum of 2 years of full time professional experience.
c) The written test will be conducted to examine their knowledge in the discipline of their qualifying degree,
which forms the prerequisite for admission to the corresponding specialization of the M.Tech/M.Phil
Programme.
d) Candidates must have at least two years full time work experience in a government organization or companies
of repute in the relevant filed.
e) There is no age restriction for sponsored candidates but preference will be given to those candidates below
45 years of age.
f) The employer must indicate that the candidate will not be withdrawn from the programme before its
completion.
g) Sponsorship in this context means retention of lien on the post and grant of suitable allowance/pay etc. By the
parent organization.
h) Working candidates on UGC/CSIR/Atomic Energy fellowship etc. shall not be considered a sponsored
candidate.
i) Candidate shall not be allowed to join his organization before completion of the programme.
j) Self sponsored candidate for Ph.D programme: A candidate who qualifies the written test and is
selected for the Ph.D programme, but could not get the ISM Junior Research Fellowship may be
registered for Ph.D. (full time) as a self sponsored candidate.
1.8 MEDICAL FITNESS
A candidate selected for a programme will be offered admission, only if he/she is found fit as per the norms & standards of
medical fitness set by ISM. An overview of the standards of medical fitness set by ISM is presented below.
A candidate should have good general physique with:
- Chest measurement: Not less than 70 cms with satisfactory limit of expansion and contraction.
- Vision: Should be normal. In case of defective vision, it should be corrected to 6/9 in both eyes or 6/6 in the
better eye.
Hearing: Should be normal. Defective hearing should be corrected.
- Heart & Lungs: Should not have any abnormality and no history of mental diseases or epileptic fits.
The candidate shall submit the medical certificate in the prescribed proforma at the time of admission.
However, all candidates will be examined by a medical board of the ISM before admission, whose decision
for medical fitness will be final.
1.9 IMPORTANT POINTS TO BE NOTED (for M Tech/ M Phil Programmes)
(a) If adequate number of students are not available in particular programme, the ISM may not run that
programme. In such situation the demand draft received towards payment of fee shall be returned to the
candidate.
(b) If a M.Tech student leaves the programme at any time within 24 months, he/she shall be deemed to have
withdrawn from the programme.
(c) GATE/NET candidate will be given preference over NON-GATE/NON-NET Candidate.
(d) Scholarship will not be paid to candidates having GATE/NET score less than the stipulated limit.
(e) Candidate with equivalent qualifications recognized by Govt. of India such as AMIE. IETE etc. can also
apply.
(f) Fee once paid will not refundable.
(g) If any M.Tech/M.Phil programme does not run due to shortage of requisite number of candidates, the
candidates who have taken admission in that programme may be allowed to change his/her admission to other
M.Tech/M.Phil programme (even if the candidates has not/applied for that programme), where vacant seat is
available in the respective categories and the qualification of the candidate matches with the eligibility
condition of that programme.
(h) Students in the M Tech/ M Phil Programmes are required to maintain 75% attendance in the semester classes
to make him/her eligible for the end semester examination.
1.10 HOSTEL FACILITY:
Accommodation in hostel in the campus may be provided subject to availability.
1.11 JURISDICTION:
The completed application duly superscribed on the envelope “For M.Tech/M.Phil/Ph.D Admission” should reach:-
