Project Shakti was launched in 2001 in Andhra Pradesh to empower rural women financially and improve health and hygiene. It selects self-help groups from villages of 1,000-2,000 people and trains an entrepreneur to sample and sell HUL products door-to-door. HUL assists the entrepreneurs, called Shakti Ammas, in obtaining bank loans. The program aims to reach 100,000 entrepreneurs across 500,000 villages and impact 600 million consumers by 2010. It has now expanded to 15 states with 45,000 entrepreneurs generating 700-1,000 rupees per month.
