WORK RELATED SKILLS

Computer I use Microsoft Office in all my course work. I also set up an

Access database as Membership Secretary of a student
society. A lot of my research for my dissertation was done via
the internet and I have authored my own web page.

Language French: fluent; German: reading, writing and conversational at

a social level.

Presentation As a prefect, class rep, tour guide and assistant teacher, I

have had much practice and I now feel confident and relaxed
when making formal presentations, often using Powerpoint.

Communication Teaching has developed my ability to deal with people more

than any other activity. This is partly because I had some
difficult pupils to contend with, but also because I had to find
ways of interesting and motivating everyone. I had to see
things from their point of view to become a more effective
teacher.

Organisation I have had to manage my time when working and studying;

created and maintained a system to manage the membership
of one of the largest societies at the University; planned my
dissertation carefully, organised work rotas for myself and
others as a supervisor at Hot Dawg

WORK EXPERIENCE

Tour Guide June – Sept 2008

Working in the local distillery’s Visitor Centre, showing European tourists around the
centre, communicating in French and in German, on occasion. I was surprised at
how quickly I improved my German and realised I like the buzz of working under
pressure.

“Lecteur” Oct 2007 – April 2008

I worked as an assistant teacher in the Hermitage Lycée, as part of my course. The
pupils came from a very varied background which sometimes made keeping
discipline a challenge. I learnt the importance of being prepared, being flexible and,
when necessary, being firm.

Ice Cream Vendor, South of France June – Sept 2007

I had to find this job myself when over in France and it was essential for me to
maintain a good sales target and earn enough money to stay in France. It was an
expensive area but there were many tourists and I made enough money to live well
and also buy several French films on video to help with my dissertation the following
year. I gained a lot of confidence in dealing with people and improved my French
enormously.

Sales Assistant Hot Dawg at least 15 hours per week during term time 2005 and
2006
Working in the fast food environment during term time showed me the importance of
working as part of a team, dealing pleasantly with customers and balancing my work
and my studies. After three months I was promoted to Supervisor/Team Leader.

POSITIONS OF RESPONSIBILITY

At University I was elected as Class Rep in my first year and put class complaints
and suggestions to the lecturers at regular meetings. I was also involved in the
Department’s Open Day, taking school parties round the campus. I am currently
Membership and Social Secretary of the Students Wine Club, attending Freshers’
Week to market our society to new students. I also organise our social calendar,
including the Bacchus Ball, a formal event with over 100 people attending.
While working at Hot Dawg, I was promoted twice and when I left I was a Team
Leader/ Assistant Supervisor. This meant that I was responsible for the work of up
to 6 people on my shift, which was often over a very busy period.
In my last two years at Dunvegal I was a Prefect and in my last year I was given
responsibility for organising the buddy system, when senior pupils looked after the
new intake. This involved gathering suitable volunteers and giving a presentation to
Primary 7 pupils, prior to their first term at Dunvegal.
