Another Failed DePuy Hip Device?

DePuy Orthopaedics’ ASR XL Acetabular System and ASR Hip Resurfacing System both fail in recipients
12 to 13 percent of the time after only five years. The subsequent DePuy hip replacement recall affected
93,000 recipients worldwide. The metal-on-metal hip replacements, which were supposed to be more
durable than other types of implants, caused pain, swelling, dislocation, and release of toxic metal ions
into the surrounding tissues and bloodstream. Some orthopedists even reported nerve damage as a
result of DePuy’s negligence.

Despite this profound failure of product testing and consumer safety, the Johnson & Johnson
subsidiary’s woes continue. DePuy’s Pinnacle Solution (also known as the Pinnacle Acetabular Cup
System) appears to also be a negligently designed metal-on-metal hip replacement. The U.S. Food and
Drug Administration recently reported that 500 recipients of the Pinnacle system complained about
pain, swelling, dislocation, and doctors reported increased levels of toxic metal ions in recipients’ hip
regions and bloodstreams. Sound familiar? Even now, people are filing Pinnacle hip replacement
lawsuits.

No one knows exactly how dangerous the Pinnacle system is or how many have been sold on the
market. However, given how DePuy mismanaged the ASR failures and recall, perhaps another DePuy hip
replacement recall is in the works. As always, though, the Rottenstein Law Group stands ready to assist
recipients of DePuy’s defective hip replacements in their quest for compensation from the negligent
manufacturer.
