Project Gaia and it’s sister organization, Gaia
Association promote clean-burning alcohol- fueled stoves in Africa and Latin America. Gaia is dedicated to the sustainable production of bioethanol in locally- owned and operated microdistilleries.
Ethiopia: Humanitarian relief in 3 refugee camps (3,500
families). Commercialization project in Addis Ababa. Brazil: Pilot studies in Minas Gerais, potential commercial project in the Northeast. Nigeria: Working with Government and private sector to establish network of microdistilleries. Haiti: Team established: non-profit, businesses, Government, investors to develop ethanol market. Madagascar: Research project underway to evaluate feasibility of pairing stoves with microdistilleries.
The CleanCook stove has logged over 2 million stove-use days
in the laboratory and the field without a single stove accident. Efficiency : 61% • Power: 1.5 kW • Exceeds WHO emissions benchmarks 1 liter of ethanol per day cooks 3 meals for a family of 5 • Extensive IAP testing • Monitoring & Evaluation • Saves up to 2.5 hours of cooking per day for women • Very positive user feedback • Ashden Award Winner • Energy Globe Award
Next Steps: Install an efficient 1,000 liter per day ethanol
distillery in Addis (BEIA/World Bank) • Conduct microdistillery pilot studies across Ethiopia (Ethio EPA) • Stove pilot studies in Léogâne & Port au Prince, Haiti (with IRC) • Commercial project in Haiti (7-party MOU signed) • Install network of cassava-based microdistilleries across Nigeria • Continue Madagascar research on ethanol stoves and distilleries (WB, Practical Action)
