Show-Me STATE GAMES Proud to Announce Opening Ceremonies


 
COLUMBIA, Mo. – The opening ceremonies for the 25th anniversary of the Show-Me STATE GAMES
is ready to begin! The ceremonies will take place on Friday, July 17 at 7:00 p.m. at the Hearnes
Arena Center.

Christian Cantwell and Larry Young, who are both Missouri natives and medal winners at Olympic
events, will be included as guest speakers. Cantwell, from Jefferson City, MO, is an All-American shot
putter. His best throw was recorded in 2004 at 73ft 11 ½ in and he received a silver medal in the 2008
summer Olympics held in Beijing, China.

Young, from Columbia, MO, has competed mainly in the 50-kilometer walk in his career. He received
a bronze medal when he competed in the 1968 summer Olympics held in Mexico City, Mexico and
repeated that performance four years later in Munich during the 1972 summer Olympics.

Also featured during the ceremonies will be the Mid-Missouri Highsteppers and the ceremonial torch
lighting to signal the start of the GAMES. Participants of events are welcome to join the Parade of
Athletes into the Hearnes Arena. They will meet at the south end of the Hearnes Fieldhouse at 6:00
p.m. to line up.

The Show-Me STATE GAMES was established in 1985 as a non-profit program of the Governor’s
Council on Physical Fitness & Health and has now grown to be the largest state games in the nation.
This statewide multi-sport program is designed to inspire Missourians to develop their physical and
competitive abilities and to foster an amateur athletic network of participants, volunteers and sports
enthusiasts throughout Missouri.
