prepositions are essential for ESL. Some prepositions are short, typically containing
five letters or fewer. There are, however, a significant number of multi word
prepositions. Throughout the evolution of the the English language, new prepositions
have come into use, old ones fallen out of use, and the meaning of existing
prepositions changed.

A preposition is a word governing, and usually coming in front of, a noun or


pronoun and expressing a relation to another word or element, as in:

• She left before breakfast.


• What did you come for? (For what did you come?)
