• Why don't you / we go to the movies tonight?
• You / we could visit New York while you're / we're there. • Let's go to the travel agent's this afternoon to book our ticket. • What about asking your brother for help? • How about going to Hawaii for your vacation? • I suggest you / we take all the factors into consideration before we decide.
We can report suggestions in two different ways:
“Let’s go to the cinema”
1.- Using a gerund to introduce the indirect sentence , after the
introductory verb. She suggested going to the cinema.
2.- With THAT+ subject + (should) + verb in the base form.
She suggested that we should go to the cinema.
She suggested that we go to the cinema.
Note: The expression: she suggested that we should go to the cinema
is old fashioned nowadays. We omit “should “ from the sentence in actual English.
Reporting verbs for suggestions: advise, invite, recommend,
suggest, insist, propose...
More examples:
a. "It would be a good idea to see the dentist", said my mother.
My mother suggested I (should) see the dentist.
b. The dentist said, "I think you should use a different
toothbrush". The dentist recommended that I should use a different toothbrush.
c. My manager said, "I think we should examine the budget
carefully at this meeting." My manager proposed that we (should) examine the budget carefully at the meeting.
d. "Why don't you sleep overnight at my house?" she said.
She suggested that I (should) sleep overnight at her house.
