This poem describes the suffering witnessed by the speaker wandering through the streets of London. In every person they see, they see marks of weakness and woe, and they hear cries of fear and sorrow from men, infants, and soldiers. The chimney sweeps' cries appall the speaker, and they hear curses from harlots that destroy newborn infants and plague marriage. The speaker sees and hears signs of human suffering throughout the city of London.

In every cry of every Man,
In every Infants cry of fear, In every voice: in every ban, manacles: grilletes The mind-forg'd manacles I hear
How the Chimney-sweepers cry Every blackning Church appalls, appalls: horrorizar And the hapless Soldiers sigh hapless: desafortunado Runs in blood down Palace walls
But most thro' midnight streets I hear How the youthful Harlots curse harlots: prostitutes Blasts the new-born Infants tear blast: destroy And blights with plagues the Marriage hearse blight: arruinar hearse: coche fúnebr
