DESCRIBING THE WORLD AROUND YOU

(to be used in cojunction with unit 33 of English vocabulary in use)

My land, like many, is an enormous set of varying landscapes existing in contrast yet harmony
from one extreme to another: from the open, desolate and uninhabited wild lands that flank
the reaching and unforgiving craggy heights of the scotch mountains in the north, to the
rolling, sun-kissed fields and fruitsome orchards of the south-east of England. To the west you
will find the green and fertile hills of rainy Wales crowded with sheep, fast-flowing trout rivers
and crystal-clear lakes that reflect the energy and the serenity of nature. The east offers a
calmer climate and warmer days swept over a flat landscape long since tamed by man and
now organized into countless fields and prairies bearing a golden summer harvest.

My favourite part of the country, however, is in the middle, to the south: quaint cottage
villages criss-crossed by narrow country lanes that lead to ancient yet bountiful forests, lush,
green and cool in summer and explosive in colours for autumn. Alive with every kind of animal
from boar, deer and badger to the pheasant, the woodpecker and the owl. Oaks of hundreds
of years of age speak volumes and the air is sweet with the scent of mother nature.

This is middle England – a green and pleasant land.

What about your country?!
