Patholophysiology

The infecting organisms trigger inflammation of the airways. Inflammatory


exudate fills the alveolar air spaces, producing lung consolidation. Impaired
gas exchange in the alveoli leads to various degrees of hypoxia, depending
on the amount of lung tissue affected.
