same in some ways but they are
different animals.

Alligators and crocodiles are reptiles.


They sit in the sun to warm their
body. They go in the water to cool

Alligators and crocodiles begin life as
an egg. They make a big nest out of
plants and mud. 5

Crocodiles and alligators stay near the


nest to protect the eggs before they
hatch.

The eggs hatch on the land. The
mother then gently carries the babies
in her mouth to the water. 7

Alligators and crocodiles hunt and eat


other animals.

They wait underwater with only their
eyes, ears and nostrils above the water. 9

Alligators and crocodiles have scaly


skin. Their body shape and long,
strong tail help them swim.

An alligator has a wide flat head


with a snout that is rounded.

A crocodile has a long, narrow snout.
Its jaw is not as strong as an

When the alligator’s mouth is closed,


you can only see its top teeth.

Alligators live in freshwater ponds,


rivers, lakes and swamps.
