13.1 ECONOMIC IMPACTS
 One example is the September 11 attacks.
 The total loss of life and property cost insurance
companies about US$40 billion.
 The airline industry was affected terribly as many people
were afraid of flying.
 Outcome: The US government had to step in to provide
economic help to the airline industry so that they do not
close down.

 Another example is the attacks in Bali
 Tourism was the main income for the people there

 Tourist arrivals fell by more than 50% following the


bomb blasts
 Many Balinese lost their livelihood

 Outcome: The Indonesian government faced pressure to


relieve the economic hardships faced by the people there.

 Worldwide economic impact;
 Governments increase their spending to cater for the
increased security.
 Many governments also spend a lot of money and
resources in holding exercises to ensure that the
emergency services and their citizens are prepared and
know what to do in the event of a terrorist attack.
 For example, in January 2006, Singapore carried out Exercise
Northstar V.

13.2 SOCIAL IMPACTS
 Acts of terrorism may create tension and suspicion
among the various ethnic and religious groups.
 Outcome: In Singapore, the Community Engagement
Programme was launched to ensure that Singaporeans
are better equipped to maintain social cohesion and
harmony.
 Aim: To bring together Singaporeans from different
communities to strengthen inter-communal bonds and to
come up with response plans to help deal with potential
communal tensions.
POLITICAL IMPACTS
13.3 POLITICAL IMPACTS
 Governments have the responsibility to keep their citizens safe
from terrorists.
 Therefore, governments have had to tighten various controls
(e.g. stepping up border security).
 As a result, it slowed down immigration clearance.

 Intrusive legislation have also been introduced.

 Often, these measures and laws infringes on individual freedom


and personal privacy.
