Procedures (30 minutes total)

1. ( 3 min.) Students will gather in the center of the gym for warm up activity.

Students will be given instructions for Warm-up Activity – “The Lion” Freeze

Tag and “The Lion” will be chosen.

“We are going to warm up a quick game of Freeze Tag. “Child’s Name” is

"It”, who will be "The Lion". As soon as I blow the whistle, begin moving

around to get away from the "The Lion", you must stay on the court. "The

Lion" will run around trying to tag everyone. When you get tagged you

must freeze and stop where you are. The only way to free a tagged person

is for two people to join hands around the tagged, frozen person and circle

them once. In order to completely free the tagged person, the students

circling must make the sound that a lion makes. What sound would that

be? (Roar) Remember to FREEZE when you hear the whistle. Does

everyone understand?”

2. ( 3 min.) Warm-Up Activity – “The Lion” Freeze Tag *Participation check list*

3. ( 3 min.) Hook/ Review of Warm-Up. Students will gather in the center of the

gym and be led in a brief discussion. *Participation check list*

“Did everyone enjoy that game of Freeze Tag? What happened

when the lion tagged you? What did you classmates have to do to

help free you? Today we are going to play "Capture the Lion".

This game is similar to the freeze tag game that we just played, but

we will be outside on the big field! We will be focusing on good

teamwork and sportsmanship!”

4. ( 4 min.) Students will be given instructions for playing “Capture the Lion” and

a few safety rules: 2-hand touch/ no pushing or shoving and be aware of others.

They will be counted off by 1, 2, 1, 2… and split into two teams

(ie: blue & gold). Game is played on the court; each has a side

where their lion is at the goal end (under the bb hoop). Blue team
tries to capture gold side’s lion and vice versa. Blue team defense

tries to tag gold team using 2 hand touch and a "Roar", and vice

versa- to get the opposite team out of play. Tagged students go into

opposite team’s "lion’s den" at the end of the court, behind/ on the

sides of the opposite team’s lion (but not in front or close enough

to touch or block the lion). The only way to free teammates from

den- 2 teammates to form ring (holding hands) around captured

teammate and walk them back to their side of the court while

roaring (they cannot be stopped). The first team to capture lion

and bring it back to their side wins game. NOTE: Student holding

lion can still be tagged and must go to the "lion’s den". If time

permits, we will play running, then walking, then skipping. When a

team’s lion has been captured, and brought to the other side’s half

of the court- the whistle blows and the game/ round is over.

5. (15 min) Play “Capture the Lion” *Participation check list*

6. ( 2 min) Closing

“Great job today! Everyone followed directions. Now go and shake

2 people's hands from opposing team. What did we practice today?

You have shown good teamwork!”
