Three Phase revision

D. Farquharson

Revision for outcome 1

1. Explain how a three phase A.C generator produces voltage

2. Explain the different ways in which windings can be connected together (include labelled
drawing)

3. For Star connected supplies, explain phase, line voltage, and current relationships.

4. For Delta connected supplies, supplies explain phase, line voltage, and current relationships.

5. State the instantaneous and sinusoidal expression for the following: - Windings connected in star,
RYB, phase max voltage 160v.
6. Draw to scale, a phasor diagram showing the above voltages.

7. State 4 advantages of 3 phase over single phase systems

Revision for outcome 2/3

1. A delta connected supply has a frequency of 50 Hertz. If the line voltage EAB = 420 ∠0 Volts,
and the impedance of each phase comprises a 0.037 H inductor with a resistance of 11Ω,
determine the following:-

(i) the three line voltages

(ii) the current in each phase of the load

(iii) the current in each line of the supply

(iv) Draw a phasor diagram showing all voltages and currents

2. Three identical loads each having a resistance of 30 Ω and inductive reactance of 40 Ω are
connected first in star and then in delta to a 400 V three-phase supply. Calculate the phase
currents and line currents for each connection.
3. The above unbalanced star connected loads are connected to a 3 phase, 4 wire supply with a line
voltage of 415v. Calculate

(i) the three phase load voltages

(ii) the current in each line

(iii) the value of neutral current

(iv) the value of voltage present if the neutral was disconnected at the load and measured
Outcome 4

1. A 22 kW 400 V balanced delta-connected load has a power factor of 0.5. Calculate

(a) the line current

(b) the phase current.

2. A balanced star-connected three-phase load of 12 Ω per phase is supplied from a 415 V 50 Hz

mains supply at unity power factor. Calculate (a) the phase voltage, (b) the line current and (c)
the total power consumed.
3. Draw on the diagram below, a method for connecting 2 wattmeters to measure total active power.
