What is MPPT?
 Maximum Power Point Tracker
 A maximum power point tracker (or MPPT) is

a high efficiency DC to DC converter that

presents an optimal electrical load to a solar
panel or array and produces a voltage
suitable for the load
 Minimizes the power loss reasonable amount
What is MPPT?
Why loss?

 When the battery is charged from the PV

module there is power loss due to the
battery rating and solar module rating. e.g.
◦ Solar module power = 16 V * 7 amp = 112 watt
◦ Battery Power = 13V * 7amp = 91watt
◦ Loss = 21watt
Solution…..
 MPPT
◦ Battery power = 13V * 8.5
Amp
◦ =110.5 watt
◦ Loss = Very Low
◦ Smart devices needed to
control it.
Hardware and Components
 Three units:
◦ Voltage control
◦ Charging unit
◦ Solar array protection block

 Components
◦ Microcontroller
 ADC
 PWM
◦ MOSFET
Hardware and Components
 ADC
◦ To measure the solar power(Voltage)
◦ To measure the battery power (Voltage)
 MOSFET
◦ Used as a switch
 PWM
◦ To control the MOSFET switching
◦ Control the current
ADC
 Used to measure the power
from the solar module
◦ Uses the voltage divider rule to
divide higher voltage to 5 volts
 Used to measure the power
from the battery to know the
charging state
PWM
 PWM can be used in efficient current
regulator
 Can be used to drive the MOSFET as a switch
MOSFET
 Used PWM to control
current and
switching.
My update
 Microcontroller(dsPIC33F16GS502)
◦ PWM
 Duty cycle 50%
 100Khz
