Evans & Biddle to Call for Oversight of District Leased Vehicles

Legislation to Require Mayoral & Council Approval for New or Expired Leases

Washington, DC – Councilmembers Jack Evans and Sekou Biddle tomorrow will introduce
legislation that would require Mayoral and Council approval for all new and expired
District vehicle leases.

“We are determined to phase out all District leased vehicles that are not essential for
daily work-related activities,” said Evans. “This legislation will require a clear
justification for the use of any and all vehicles leased by the city.”

The Automobile Lease, Procurement, and Disposal Reform Act of 2011 would require the
Mayor to submit for Council approval an annual accounting of all vehicles leased, owned,
or operated by the District of Columbia.

“The Council has an important role to play in making sure government vehicle leases are
undertaken in accordance with the law, and that leases make sense from a long-term
cost standpoint,” Biddle said. “After reading the report produced today by
Councilmember Wells, it is clear that routine Council review of vehicle leases and
purchases should be required.”
