Perth Modern School

The House System

The house system of one of the most prestigious schools in the

state, Perth Modern School, was established in 2007 and each of the
four houses were named after each of the first four School
Principals.

The Four houses and their colours are:

Brown - Blue
Downing – Yellow
Parsons – Green
Sampson – Red

The House system is a vertical organisation that stretches across

the school, and works alongside the horizontal year system. The
winners of class and school activities are awarded House points and
certificates for the demonstration of achievement in the areas of
academic study, value, school community, and sport.

For the students that achieve state, national and international

recognition are also rewarded House points. All students are
encouraged to complete over 20 hours of Community Service over
year 8 and 9. Students also need to obtain complete and submit an
‘Application for house points to be awarded full house points’.

House points not only contribute to the house totals, they also
contribute to their own individual total. There are many ways of
obtaining House points such as obtaining Honour and Merit
Certificates, and Sphinx Society Membership. The House Certificates
that a student is awarded are handed to the successful student
during an Advocate Period, House, or Year Assembly.

Ultimately, student’s work towards achieving a Bronze, Silver, and

Gold Sphinx Badge award throughout their full 5 years at Perth
Modern School and the students with the highest House point totals
in each year are awarded and rewarded with an invitation to
participate in a House reward Excursion at the end of the year.
There is also an Annual Champion House Shield awarded to the
House with the highest point total for the year.

The Sphinx Badges and the amount of points needed:

Bronze Sphinx Badge – 300 House Points
Silver Sphinx Badge – 600 House Points
Gold Sphinx Badge – 1000 House Points.
