History of Army Services Corps
(ASC)
•ASC is the oldest the largest and the oldest administrative service in
the Indian Army.

•ASC was formed by the British in 1750 and was known as the
Commissariat Department.

• ASC is entrusted with the responsibility of providing rations to Indian


Armed forces

•Lt. Gen GS Dhillon is the current DG of the ASC.

•It is one of the most decorated supply corps in the world.


Supply Management by ASC
Rations supplied by ASC is divided into dry and fresh.
Dry rations include Rice, wheat, sugar, dal, dry fruits and trimmed
fruits.
Army procures all its dry rations directly from farmers.
Fresh rations include vegetables, fruits, meat, milk.
ASC follows Hub and spoke model for distribution of dry rations.
Dry rations are procured centrally through Army purchase
organization (APO) after quality clearance by MOD.
After dry rations are procured by APO they are distributed
through ASC offices located at the 6 tactical command centers.
All the purchases are made after competitive bidding.
Fresh rations on the other hand are procured locally .
Supplying rations to Siachen
•Siachen is the highest battle field In the world at 5753 m and the
last Indian outpost is located at the height of 11875 m.

•Rations are ferried to Indian forward by mules and helicopters.

•Each helicopter trip costs the army ` 1 lakh.

•By the time a piece of bread reaches a soldier at the frontline it


costs ` 100.
