Falling Blackberries

By: Lizzy Gee

You give me one rose

Placing a simple kiss on the cheek.

I can’t help but think how lucky I suppose

But as you turn away I see a flash

A glimpse of something other than yourself

Bringing back a past horror with a chronic thrash.

You give me another rose

Show me a good time

But when it is done the vice knows.

The rose stem had a prick

Sharp and cutting

Inflicting a dose of playful deception leaving me sick

As the blood oozes from my hand

I will not let go

I harden my grip as glass turns back to sand.

You give me a few more roses

Whisper I love you in my ear

But blasphemy is not recommended for my subconscious exposes

The devils inside joke for a swindled heart.

I do not care to notice

Nor do I wish to realize my mistake for the start.

Still I caressed the night with passion

Of a naïve newcomer.

You give me a dozen roses

Attempt to present a compassionate heart.

I fall for the act not minding a few more glimpses which imposes

Something uneasy about your stare

Laughing away concern with a kiss and some more.

But as we dove into the fields far away from anywhere

I just had to look up see

Witnessing my roses turning to ash

And very many blackberries falling around me.
