Where is it ?

On the west coast of Mexico

Why is it famous ?

Our Lady of Guadalupe, also called the Virgin of Guadalupe is a 16th century Roman Catholic
Mexican icon representing an apparition of the Virgin Mary. It is Mexico's most popular religious and
cultural image. Guadalupe's feast day is celebrated on December 12, commemorating the traditional
account of her appearances to Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin on the hill of Tepeyac near Mexico City
from December 9, 1531 till December 12, 1531.

Saint Juan Diego was an indigenous Mexican who reported an appearance of the Virgin Mary as Our
Lady of Guadalupe in 1531. He had a significant impact on the spread of the Catholic faith within
Mexico.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City is the second most visited Roman Catholic
shrine in the world.

When your walking along outside to go visit the different chapels, you get the opportunity to stop
and see the outdoor Grottos

Pilgrims will come to the Shrine Church, most of all, to receive God's forgiveness in the Sacrament of
Penance and to participate in the Holy Mass. Through her beautiful image behind the altar of
sacrifice, Our Lady of Guadalupe will continue her mission of bringing Christ to us and bringing us to
Christ.

Votive candle chapel

As Pilgrims leave the Pilgrim Center and begin to ascend the trail to the site of the Shrine Church,
they will find a prayerful place of rest at the Mother of Good Counsel Votive Candle Chapel.

This chapel offers Pilgrims an opportunity to   light a candle as a long-lasting memorial for special
intentions.   From the distance, the intense glow of candles beckons a warm welcome to the shrine
grounds. Stained glass windows honouring Our Blessed Mother under her titles of Our Lady of
Fatima, Our Lady of Knock, Our Mother of Good Counsel, Our Lady of Sorrows, Our Lady of Loretto,
