Artificial Lift

PCM Artificial Lift Systems

Lower life cycle costs and operation simplicity remain the main
reasons why operators select Progressing Cavity Pump (PCP)
technology for artificial lift applications.

Working Principle
Inserting a single helical rotor, precisely machined from high strength steel, in a double internal
helical stator, moulded in elastomer*, creates sealed lenticular cavities. With rotor in rotation,
cavities are progressing along the pump, carrying liquid, gas or solids gently. This makes the PC
Pump best for viscous and abrasive fluids.

Progressing Cavity Pump 3D visualization of sealed

cutaway cavities

As the PCP is a volumetric pump, the flow rate depends solely on the rotor speed.

Operational simplicity
Easy production control
The PCP volumetric technology allows easy adjustment of production according to rotation
speed. With a Variable Speed Drive, the same equipment can cover a 3:1 range in the production
rate.

Steady production
The PCP volumetric, non pulsating and emulsion free system handles steadily well dynamics,
viscosities or free - gas content fluctuations. A PC Pump is amazingly efficient even at low
submergence.

Operating safety
Patented anti-lock and electric braking systems protect site personnel. All moving parts
are caged and protected from direct access. Our systems can be engineered to meet ATEX
specifications.

Simple and cost effective maintenance

Simple and regular preventive maintenance on surface components drastically reduces their
downtime.

Artificial Lift System

Lower life cycle costs

Energy savings
The inherent overall efficiency of the PCP can save up to 10 to 50% of total energy
consumption compared to rod or electrical submersible pumps.

Lower capital expenditure

Initial costs are reduced due to lack of expensive foundations, simple transportation
& installation.

Extended life operation

Low rotation speed (below 400 rpm), non-pulsating operation, constant stress on rod
string and PCM’s high quality ensure maximum operational lifespan.

Reduced environmental impact

The unobtrusive profile of the quiet and leak-free surface driveheads makes the PC
Pump more acceptable in environmentally sensitive areas.

Artificial Lift HRPCP

HRPCP technology
Older wells often have a high gas-to-oil ratio (GOR) that traditional
downhole pumps are unable to handle. The Hydraulically Regulated
PCP (HRPCP) opens new doors to multiphasic challenges.

Limitless multiphase technology

PCM is in the final stages of developing a patented multiphase Progressing Cavity Pump technology
that is capable of handling multiphase fluids with up to a 90% Gas Void Fraction (GVF).

The patent consists of adding hydraulic regulators in-between cavities. The self-adjusting technology
provides better pressure and temperature distribution between the first and last cavities.

Raise pump stator reliability in all conditions

t identical condition levels, the HRPCP offers higher lifespan and better performances than a
A
conventional PCP, thanks to:

• lower stator temperature Pump discharge

• less stator strain Pressure
• lower friction torque
• less power consumption

Successful tests have been conducted with 90% GVF (Gas PCP
void fraction) both in PCM Flow Technology Centre and
on-field.

Test results show that HRPCP technology is more efficient

HRPCP
in mature fields with erratic gas levels than conventional
gas lift systems and that it can extend the lifespan
of conventional PCP in multiphase conditions.

PCM Vulcain™

PCM Vulcain™ range of PCP

Producing unconventional hydrocarbons with thermal
oil recovery requires artificial lift technology capable of
withstanding high operating temperatures.

High temperature technology

PCM Vulcain™ is a patented all-metal artificial lift PCP system, capable of pumping extremely
hot fluids (350°C) with very low to very high viscosities (1 to 100+ cP).

that guarantees an optimal rotor-stator fit.

Field tested and approved

PCM Vulcain™ HT Intensive field campaigns show that PCM Vulcain brings conventional PCP benefits to high

replacing an ESP temperature applications, making it ideally suited for use in continuous or cyclic steam
injection recovery:

• operates efficiently at low downhole pressures,

a key challenge for Low Pressure SAGD
• non shearing and emulsion-free,
reducing engineering for oil/water separation
• extending production cycles in CSS when viscosity increases or enabling easy
start up in SAGD (versus ESP)
• overall production costs reduced compared to ESP or Beam pumps.

Accessories
Zero-Leak Oryx Rotary Seal
Available option on all drivehead models, the Oryx rotary seal is low maintenance and
has a zero tolerance for leaks. The early warning seal failure system helps to minimize
environmental impact.

The integrated BOP

The integrated BOP includes the BOP and the flow tee. It also comes with 2” LP and
3” LP Flow T connection for surface gauge and pressure switch. Compatible with polished
rods, it comes with 1 1/4” or 1 1/2” rams, 3 1/8” 3 000 psi top and 4 1/16” 3 000 psi bottom,
all studs and nuts.

Variable speed drive

A variable speed drive (VSD) allows you to optimize the production by controlling the
drive speed. The VSD also protects pump equipment from over-torque, heat and well
pressures.

We know how to select the best outdoor configuration, thanks to our extensive experience
in installing VSDs in hostile environments such as deserts and tropical climates.

Motors
PCM provides robust electric or hydraulic motors for smooth operation of the PCP system.
4 or 6-pole motors are available with all levels of protection (Exd, ExnA, Standard), and
ATEX, IEC and NEMA certifications.

PCM motors are designed to handle the total torque absorbed, ambient temperature
and drivehead. Specific options can be integrated for high radial torque transmission
configurations.

Pony rod set 11 to 44 feet length, 1 1/4” and 1 1/2” diameter polished rods.

Rod centralizer
API Sucker rods, pony rods and couplings
PCM recommends Grade D (4 142) Sucker Rods, from OD 3/4” to 1.1/2”, designed for moderate
to heavy loads in non-corrosive or effectively inhibited wells. 1 1/4” and 1 1/2” sucker rods
Sucker rods
feature a modified pin to give more torque resistance for PCP operations. A kit of pony rods –
from 1 to 12 ft – for spacing the rotor/stator configuration.

Non-rotating centralizers
Pony rod
Non-rotating centralizers help prevent rotational wear of the tubing. PCM calculates rod/tubing
side loading and can recommend centralizer placement in deviated or horizontal wells.
Rotor head coupling

Hollow rods
Rotor Hollow rods, produced from seamless pipes with box-box connections, are the best choice
for high-torsion operation. Tubing wear is drastically reduced thanks to external and near
flush joints.

Tubing drain
The tubing drain provides a simple method for draining the tubing string before tripping
out of the well. The opening pressure setting is 2 800 psi, but can be adjusted using
6 shear screws.

Torque anchor
PCM recommends the CAM-LOC torque anchor which combines both centralizing

Gas separator
Connected below the torque anchor, the gas separator uses centrifugal forces
Stop bushing to separate gas from the produced liquids, before they enter the pump. There are
2 configurations of the PCP Gas Separator:

• light Oil: for oil 24° API and greater

Torque Anchor • heavy Oil: for oil less than 24° API

ROTOR SIZING vs ELASTOMER SWELLING

With a unique range of 14 sizes of rotor for each pump model, PCM anticipates elastomer swelling over time and provides the perfect rotor/stator fit for an optimized
pump efficiency after 2 to 3 weeks of operation. Selection is based on PCM’s outstanding database and experience, and according to various criteria such as
elastomer type, oil gravity, pump model and temperature.

* The bearing rating according to the accepted standard using the ISO calculation for L10 life rating, based on 25,000 hours of operation at full rated load
and maximum rated speed of 500 rpm. Three bearing systems are used, which ensure the thrust bearing is isolated from the radial loads. Thrust bearing
is self-aligning to provide uniform bearing load.
